Weekly #891 - Holes Competition
Title | Weekly #891 - Holes |
---|---|
Judge | Lubbyman | Closing Date | 03/11/2024 |
Description | This week's competition is inspired by my winning entry in the last competition. Any hole will do - in the ground, in walls, in everyday objects, in machines or vehicles, in clouds, in living things... the list goes on and on. There are holes all around us. Let's see them! The usual rules apply, the photo can have been taken at any time and must have been taken with a Pentax camera or acceptable clone. Entries to be submitted by midnight (GMT) on Sunday 3rd November. |

Apologies for the delay in getting the detailed comments out and thanks for your patience. But better late than never, so here they are.
MHOL190246 ‘Holes Bay’ – I wondered whether anyone would take the place name approach (Holes Bay, Wookey Hole etc.) and there it was as the first entry! An area that’s not exactly unknown to me and with plenty of views across the water to Poole. I like the composition with the clouds complementing the shape of the buildings across the water. However, the foreground isn’t convincing. One of those shots where it’s worth wandering around to try different foregrounds? But then the clouds will have moved...
SSF1957 ‘Fire in the Hole’ – I like this a lot. Colour, composition, exposure, story are spot on. The rim-lighting around the face and cap conveys the heat nicely. I hope you didn’t make him stay in place very long before pressing the shutter button...
dewsburya ‘This way to Llangollen’ – The tunnel at Chirk? Cleverly positioned to get the symmetrical reflection in the canal. What’s missing for me is something going into or out of the tunnel – boat, person, duck?
Nigelk ‘Through the Hole in the Wall’ – The architect surely knew what they were doing, you’ve spotted it and found the perfect light to accompany it. Absolutely drop-dead gorgeous!
Stevistds – Bleak and forbidding. It makes me think that somebody doesn’t want me to get out of there. The stark contrast between the hard lines of the foreground and the softness of the background adds to the feeling of being trapped and isolated. An uncomfortable photo for me!
RayW ‘Through the Lens’ – A true photographer’s photo! Getting the view through the lens in focus tops it off nicely. A pity that the RH edge of the camera is out of the frame, though.
Mike in Devon ‘>90% Holes’ – More like >99% holes! I like the holes but feel that they are let down by the background. If the background was less vivid and more blurred, perhaps, or there was a contrasting shape in the background…?
Father Ted ‘Hole in the Wall’ – At first glance it’s a picture of a waterfall. But at second glance all lines, including the waterfall, lead the eye to the ‘hole in the wall’. And then the eye is taken through the dark hole to the bright vista beyond. Clever, very effective and a lovely photo with a great feeling of depth.
Noelcmn ‘Holey Abstractions’ – I like abstracts and I like the idea behind this photo. However, a couple of niggles mean that it doesn’t quite work for me. First, the horizontal rows are not actually horizontal in the photo. Second, the 50/50 balance between in-focus and out-of-focus areas feels uncomfortable, perhaps more of one and less of the other would work better?
Flan ‘Black Hole’ – Not just black but mysterious, too. Why is it there? Where does it go? I’d prefer a tighter crop, though – more hole, less wall.
daidwozhere ‘The bridge hole’ – Another symmetrical reflection of a ‘hole’ over a canal, and a total contrast to dewsburya’s ‘This way to Llangollen’ - this one with a rurally peaceful feel, that one with a hard, industrial feel. Much the same comment, though – I’d like to have seen something going towards or through the bridge, even if only a duck.
Deciding on the top few was fairly easy, deciding on the winner was more difficult. But in the end the winner had to be ‘Hole in the Wall’ by Father Ted because that’s the one I’d most like to have on my wall. The other two podium places are a dead heat – ‘Fire in the Hole’ by SSF1957 and ‘Through the Hole in the Wall’ by Nigelk. And well done to all other entries, it’s been a pleasure seeing such a varied and interesting set of interpretations of the brief.

Thanks Lubbyman for the nice comments.
Winning is a double edged sword, who am I to critique others? But I hope to do as thoughtful a job as you.
