Weekly #889 - Physiological needs Competition

Title Weekly #889 - Physiological needs
Judge Noelcmn
Closing Date 20/10/2024
Description
I was going to call this Basic necessities, but will copy Maslow's description, of the hierarchy of needs, the base bottom line being this one. Hopefully, it covers a broad enough spectrum for submissions to this weekly challenge. Anything covering the following: air, food, drink, shelter, clothing, warmth, and sleep. I've left out the sex lest I get bared from the Forum. I have not doubt that there will be some interesting submissions to this one. I look forward to them.

The usual rules apply:
Must be shot with a Pentax Camera, or acceptable clone
Being a weekly challenge, you are welcome to scrounge your portfolios and files from any date.
The Challenge closes at midnight Sunday 20th October 2024, and hopefully, judging will be done and dusted by midday on Monday 21st.

Good luck

"I've left out the sex lest I get bared from the Forum."

Blast! There's a rather nice photo of mating butterflies somewhere in my files.

Thank you all for your submissions. Perhaps a more difficult subject, the sociological realities, which I for one, prefer to avoid, even though I am smack bang in the middle of it at any one time. Thanks for rising to the challenge, and as usual, quality and variety, the hallmarks of these weekly and monthly challenges as far as I am concerned, is exceptional.

Flan- Needing time- Getting us off to a multi-layered interpretation of the theme, and instantly recognized as a human need, a time and a place for the relaxing and rejuvenation of body and soul. Excellent comp, the monotone has enhanced the sense of quietness and calm. Great shot!

Kasperbergholt – Chinese Teapot- A beautiful study in selective focusing, the monochrome too adds to the mood of quiet expectation to the needs being met. Especially like the light and the steam. Thanks for making me thirsty, I’m gonna have a cuppa in a moment!

RayW- Needs for a summer evening- Suffice to say I am envious! Happy times, happy spaces, contentment and enjoyment comes to mind. We surely need plenty of that. A lovely crisp shot, excellently composed still life, whether intentional or not. “Wine which cheers both gods and men” shines through here. Like those reflections on the bottle and the base of the glass. And Maeve Binchy is an excellent writer- have read a few of her novels. So- A good read, a good wine, a good day. Bring it on!

Nigelk-Re-fueling- Oh yeah, a constant need. Kudos on getting this, with a fine balance of wing blur and in-focus parts of the hummingbird Moth- they are difficult to capture in flight, not that they ever alight on a flower of leaf. And of course the timing is just perfect, in the act of sucking some nectar!

Davidwozhere- Food and companionship- Now that is what I call candid street photography, journalistic and documentary all thrown into one. Superb timing, wonderful DOF, excellent comp! One part of me wishes the chair on the bottom left was removed, the other part of me says- it’s part of the context, which in this image is so important. Great photography!

MHOL190246- An essential item- a great documentary shot, and seemingly having some history to claim as well. The diagonal presentation is very appealing, and lovely textures. Some interesting Bokeh too!

Simonmac- …. Perchance to dream – Oh boy, a jarring documentary, emotive street shot! So many questions!
Superb focus on that face, and albeit a sleeping one, still screams “I have needs”. Like the juxtapositioning too, between him and the Mr Egg (presumably a restaurant) sign in the background. A fabulous image.

Lubbyman – Let sleeping dogs lie.. - Well you got me there, I certainly have no idea of what part of the anatomy is connected to what. Love the B/W presentation, and the highlighted bits of whiter fur. DOF is wonderful. But what is it? Partly looks like a paw, partly looks like a teat!

I am torn between two images here, and even considering tossing a coin. Both superb entries. I will give it to
1st- Davidwozhere, and that only because it has an action factor.
2nd – Simonmac- what a wonderfully dramatic image!

Not awarding any 3rd place for this challenge, every other entry deserves a place on the podia.

So over to you Davidwozhere!

Thank you for the 1st place Noel and for your comprehensive comments.
I too like how Simon has shown need, and its resolution. It is all too prevalent.
Now I need to get thinking - again! .... And ....
Once again, there is no notification here on the web site. Had I not found the news on Social Media John would have been chasing me like he had to last week. I will use the basic method to set a new contest but can someone put it right please?
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

Thank you for my placing Noel, and for taking your time to judge and compose your great observations.

And well done David, a great slice of life there.

I took that shot 7 years ago during the Pride Parade in Birmingham. It still disturbs me that I took it and I have not gone down that route since. 49 year old me was a lot bolder.

All the best!
