Weekly #864 - Who, What, Where, When, Why? Competition

Title Weekly #864 - Who, What, Where, When, Why?
Judge Noelcmn
Closing Date 21/04/2024
Description
One of the best practices for writers is to follow "The 5Ws" guideline, by investigating the Who, What, Where, When and Why of a story. (that's from mother Google). Why not apply it to Photography? A wide range of posibilities and angles available. Who for portraits. "What" alone can be just about anything. "Where" for your travels. "When" for those special moments. Let's see what you have

Usual rules apply:
1. Only Pentax cameras and acceptable clones.
2.The winner is expected to set, judge and preferably offer some comments/critiques of submissions.
3. You are free to use images from your archives or opt to shoot something specific for this challenge.
4. The challenge closes on Sunday 21 April 2024 at midnight BST.

Good luck!

Thank you all for your submissions. Come Friday, there was only 1 entry, and the usual regrets about that subject that I had chosen being wrong, etc all crept into the mind. Now there are 9, all superb entries, and two things have stood out for me, one was the humor in a few entries, the other was everyone rose to the challenge of meeting the “writers” technique with the questions. As usual I am humbled by these submissions, and wished they were mine.

MHOL190246- Where are you flying to? A lovely opening salvo, altogether suited for the challenge. Love that blue sky, and just a touch of red to add some variety to the color palette.

Garethjmorgan- The hatchery- LOL! If that answers all the questions, I’m outta here. Genetics gone wrongs straight out of a sci-fi movie. No beating that proud momma- or is it daddy? Who knows these days of genetic manipulations! Super interpretation of the theme, and a great story line!

Lubbyman – Lone (and lonely) photographer – Fabulous! What a great story line to this, Drama in the sky, landscape, sea turbulence, reflections and man doing something irrational. Doen’nt he need a shrink? Tremendous social documentary image!

Sueriley- Who lives here?- Indeed a question I would ask too. While not in the league of the old style “haunted” house, there is enough here to hint in that direction. Dark and foreboding, with only the car to give a hint of any human connection and perhaps modernity. As for the boats? Pirates perhaps? Lovely crisp architectural shot!

Simonmac- Going nowhere- Another cracking documentary image, but one with a decidedly human emotional impact. So many questions begging for answers to this one. The harsh light has been handled extremely well, the resultant shadow a boon to the image. Leading line, repetition is good and that entrenched decay provides a stark contrast to the smartly dressed man, whom we can gather, is asking “why”!

Dewsburya- Questions – LOL! Well now, talk about some juxtapositioning drama! Excellent comp, suitable drama and vibrant colors only enhances the message of “hopeful” that has surely survived many a storm. Wonderful DOF here. Maybe tomorrow she will not be there? Maybe that “under strain frayed rope” will snap? Love the sense of anticipation in this image. Why did you choose this image?

Flan- Back to back – another moving social documentary image, suitably enhanced with a B/W treatment. So much to appreciate here- leading lines, patterns, repetition and juxtapositioning, between the abundance of the doves and the loneliness of that figure on the right. Just a bit concerned about the skewed composition, perhaps deliberate? The bit of building? sticking out on the top right should be removed. Otherwise a tremendous dramatic image, full of emotion.

RayW- Who will I rescue! – Another sad documentary image, also loaded with questions, especially about the smaller boat. Nice mood to this- silence, anticipation, and “I’ve left some drama behind” and onto my next challenge. Like the dull colors on this one! Great shot!

Johnriley- Happy Birthday Frankie! – OK, so some of us have connections with iconic music figures For posterity yes, but also for others, like myself, that basically grew up with the music of Frankie. I shall not blame you for getting “Rag Doll” now ringing in the brains. Nice to know that he is still alive, and seemingly going strong. Like how the available stage lighting has been used here to good effect, the light on the faces is superb, and I reckon the purple coloration only adds to the festive mood. Good comp with the musical connections kept intact with those guitarists in the background. Nice touch and timing with the microphone in the hand, stuck away at the back. Wondering what a B/W version might be like. In any event, a suitably festive occasion well captured.

And onto the winners- not as easy as I had at first thought.
1st place to Lubbyman for the irrational behavior image.
2nd to Simonmac- a stirring image loaded with nostalgia and longing for better days gone by.
3rd to garethjmorgan- If I meet any of those genetically altered critters- I’m outta here.

All others HC’s.

Over to you Lubbyman!

Thank you so much Noel for setting the competition and for your comments.

Tough one this as it was a broad subject. A pity that more folk didn't submit (to be fair, I only started submitting recently myself).

Well done to the winner, other place and everyone!

All the best!

And the really scary thing about the lone (and lonely) photographer is that, as seeen by other people, most of us who contribute to this forum probably look like that from time to time...
