Weekly #792 - Mellow Yellow Competition

Competition Details
Closing Date: 13/11/2022
Judge: garethjmorgan

As my previous suggestions have been a bit obscure I thought I'd go for a very general topic this time. So any subject or genre is acceptable - as long as it contains a significant element in the colour yellow. Otherwise usual rules apply

Great set of images this week – enjoyed looking through them.
Yellow Cherry by Perspicador. Although not a lot of yellow in this image it actually makes the picture. The fruit is well positioned in the frame and contrasts well against the green leaves – a very pleasing image.
Last shades of Autumn 2022 by Johwnjr. Lovely autumnal study – nice play of light and shade on the leaves with different tones of yellow coming through. Lovely shapes with some great textures.
Hotting up by Nigelk. A fine study of the balloon – good action with the flames shooting up into the envelope and the pattern on the fabric gives it quite a dynamic feel. The choice to crop in tight works well and there is definitely plenty of yellow in this shot.
The birds have eaten all the seeds by Davidwozhere. A super pattern picture with loads of yellow again. The patterns that can be found in nature are absolutely amazing and this a fine example – well seen and well shot.
Pudsey by PRYorkshire. A fine portrait of a very cute looking Pudsey bear. He is a very attractive bear (and seems to be very happy having his picture taken!) Well exposed with a nice catchlight in the eye and lots of texture in the fur.
Hornet Argiope - Eurasian Spider - Argiope bruennichi - on its stabilimentum by Francisbd. We seem to have seen a lot of spiders recently and this is another fine specimen well-photographed. Another example where a small amount of yellow really makes the image – it really makes the subject stand out . Great shot.
Rail Way by Simonmac. A trifecta of yellows from the stripe on the step through the railings to the figure in the yellow coat. Strong leading lines in this image (in yellow) leading to the person (in yellow) who is perfectly positioned in the frame. Excellent composition.
Saab at Wicksteed Park Kettering by Vic Cross. This bought back very pleasant memories as a used to travel to school in my friends dad’s Saab back in the day (I’m not saying exactly when!). It was more of a cream colour and not in quite as good a condition as this one. Nicely exposed showing lots of the details of the vehicle as well as the very pleasing overall shape. Nice image although the car is a little tight in the frame.
Roadside rescue by John Riley. Another good vehicle study – I guess many of us have been pleased at one time or another to see the yellow of the AA hove into view. This one is almost a neon yellow – sits well on the diagonal and conveys lots of information – great detail.
Matching hues by davidtrout. A veritable study in yellow – great piece of street photography. The person is absolutely perfectly positioned in the frame ; excellent expression really well caught. Great use of negative space.
Hoverfly on buttercup by retoor. Good nature study with both th e fly and the flower well positioned and beautifully exposed. The complimentary hues of yellow stand out well against the green background.
Yellows by Ray W. Nice landscape image with three hues of yellow from the daffodils and sign in the foreground to the field of oil seed rape. This is a well constructed landscape with interest in the foreground , the mdi distance and the background.
Yellow by sue riley. Nice study of tulips – the soft focus approach gives the image a dreamy feel and accentuates the yellow flowers. I would have been tempted to get rid of the white “dots” between the flowers on the right although this is a very minor point.
No 10 by Noelcmn. Another excellent study – this image is made by the reflection of the boat – gives a very interesting shape and lifts this image out of the ordinary, Simple but very effective.
Keeping the wasp at arm's length! By Drofmit. Another scary yellow insect. This fine study of a wasp shows why it makes sense to be wary arounds these chaps. Lots of detail in this macro study which is very well exposed,
Tough picking a winner this week ; in the end I went for the sheer yellowness of “Matching Hues” .
1. Matching hues by davidtrout
2. Rail Wat by simonmac
3. Keeping the wasp at arm's length by Drofmit

Thanks for 1st place Gareth: love doing street photography, among other subjects, and this one seemed to fit the bill. There were some excellent entries this week and a reasonable turn out to support your choice of subject. Well done to my podium team mates, Simon and Tim.
I'll be back later today with the next topic.

Oh! Bother!! [other more likely expletives are available!] My comment has vanished!
Thanks for a super competition.... as evidenced by the number of entries.
Congratulations to David for that absolute corker of a shot..... knew that was impossible to beat!!
I echo what Flan wrote....
Congratulations too to Simon for another superb shot.....
and thank you for my third place.
Proves that holding the K1 in one hand can be done.... the wasp was on one of my "posing sticks" for photographing moths as I empty the trap... the stick is barely 6" long.... and was in my left hand!
I was actually moving it to a nearby bramble bush.... but further away than hornets... I like hornets, gentle giants.... wasps are a bit too unpredictable! I have some much closer shots of hornets!!
And what a difficult set to judge.... as John wrote "A great set of images"
Never be afraid to talk about your techniques...
"Give a thousand photographers...
the same camera, lens and scene...
and you'll always get a thousand different takes!!"
