Wonderful that I can take my accolade without having to conjure up a complicated contest! I hope everyone else derived enjoyment from this. We go out to the jangling of Pentangle in anticipation of more equine delights! Well done Everyone!

Thanks for entering... ten very different and difficult to judge pictures
Prehistoric Tree Stump by MHOL190246
Lovely bit of preserved wood... lots of detail made more visible by shallow DoF against a nicely coloured background and the subject itself sitting on the diagonal. Now the wood is drying out, it is showing fractures... they add interest, the stump as found would've been rather plain, I think.
Dead but still standing by PRYorkshire
Lovely tree trunk.... colour as you say is lovely. I think it might be a Beech. Nice that it has been left and not "tidied away". Nice contrast too, against the trees just turning.
Hopefully, it will have been left for wood boring beetles and their predators.
Shut that door by garethjmorgan
Love this, one of my favourite York pubs uses old doors as the interior, nice recycling of "dead wood".... I like the triangle formed here by "Gin Lane", "Botanical gardens" and the peek through the door at the bar itself!
Dead Wood by johnwnjr
After the storm indeed, plus a couple of years I think... so valuable for the local biodiversity. Nice colour of the wood lit in different places by sunlight... contrasting with the vibrant geens of the nettles and ivy.... especially the tallest nettle towards the bottom right.
Dead wood given new life by JAK
Love this wonderful carving next to a pond or slow stream.... good carving, too, it was saying Kingfisher to me before I saw your tags. Looks like a chainsaw carving, and a good one at that!! Blowtorch use to give shadow.... love it!!
A severed oak bough by davidwozhere
very nice macro shot of a well-weathered hunk of oak... like the position of the centre of the golden rays, the wonderful pallet of browns and the touches of green algae here and there.... make a good picture on a wall!
The Fallen by Perspicador
Lovely this, like some primordial beast crawling out of the new vegetation.... or a nest of snakes.... a lot of interest in this picture... the shape of the dead tree, thelush new vegetation in the foreground, the softness of the rushes below the trees in the background and the darker greens.
The picture has not one, but two, visual triangles to follow created by the branches... the outer one pulls the eye around the picture, the inner one frames some of the soft rushes. Nice that you've left some green right at the left edge.... stops the eye being drawn out of the picture on that side.
Newborough Warren Anglsey by sueriley
Dead pines in a dune system... makes me question why... green pines beyond... as a picture it leaves questions in my mind. I like the smoothness of the sand, the softness of the marram and the spikiness of the dead wood.... there is only one distraction. That orphaned clump on the right... there is a lovely dome shape to the pines until you get to that pair of small trees. Crop them out and the trees dominate the picture... at the moment, to my eye, the marram grass is winning.
Bed Post by Noelcmn
I love this... a very close up shot... just short of being macro. Lots of woodgrain to admire and also the fact that the craftsperson has carved the knob in situ.
The DoF shows off the subject against a colourful background with a soft blend of colours. Very nice overall!
Wooden Horse by retsoor
The wonderful dead&driftwood sculpture "Eden Horse" by the late Heather Jansch [ex-wife of Bert Jansch of Pentangle fame].... I am full of admiration for artists who can visualise a 3D jigsaw of a sculpture. A nicely isolated picture, despite the fact that the Eden Project heaves with people... and the subject nicely centred.
The dead wood in the sculpture is full of texture and form.... wonderful to look at!
In 3rd place, Shut that door by garethjmorgan
In 2nd place, The Fallen by Perspicador
In pole position though is....
Wooden Horse by retsoor....
until late last night, Perspicador was leading by a head, but now gets the "coveted" second spot...
the only reason retsoor won by a "branch" was the extra interest in the photo!!
Over to retsoor!
