Thanks to everyone who entered. I hope that my comments are taken in the spirit in which they were intended and no-one is offended by them. There were some really great images submitted which made judging extremely difficult. In the end I settled for Sundown by NigelK as my preferred option with Gothic Steps and Pylons coming joint second. Highly commended were Blue Skies at Sea, Edinburgh at Dusk and Sunset Couple

Edinburgh at Dusk, by Perspicador: A lovely image of Edinburgh at dusk with a good amount of detail of the buildings against the setting sun. Nicely composed and a well-balanced image. Makes me want to revisit the city when I can.

Waiting, by Tyrone 2000: I liked the use of light and dark in this intriguing image. What (or who) is she waiting for? Nicely created with good use of lighting through the doorway creating a shadow of the young lady

Gothic Steps, by David Trout: This fits the criteria very nicely. A good, sharp image making exceptionally good use of the light. The blue background enhances the image and contrasts nicely with the figure.

Blue Skies at Sea, by JohnRiley What vessel and where are they bound? I particularly liked the contrast of the two seamen and the blue sky with white clouds which set off the scene very nicely. I wonder where they were bound for.

Sundown, by NigelK: A striking shot of a tree against the setting sun. Lovely detail on the tree as its branches fan out with roosting birds for good measure. The intricate detail of the twigs creates a very pleasing picture.

Chatsworth Fountain, by PRYorkshire: An interesting angle on the subject – the monochrome treatment with spray coming off the jet of water adds to the drama with the clouds and landscape in the background adding to the overall scene.

Commuter, by Simonmac: A nice shot of the cyclist in an urban setting with the light wall contrasting well with the dark road and bike. The shadow cast by the street sign and the urban art adds to the image.

A modest Display, by Flan: An interesting angle of the people viewing the firework display with just enough illumination to make out the figures watching. The fireworks contribute to the overall image.

Pylons, by Noelcmn: An unusual take on the subject. The afterglow throws the pylons and overhead cables into stark contrast. A well balanced and creative submission. The colour of the setting sun and the darkness close to the camera create a dramatic effect.

First Light on Embleton Bay, by jofford: Just the two colours of blue and black make for a nice image. The land mass and structures thereon create a pleasing picture of what looks like a very calm day.

On the Rocks, by retsoor: The wet rocks, the waves and the surf all contribute to throwing the image of the rocks and lads into sharp contrast. It looks like a nice day with the group enjoying a swim in the sea.

Sunset Couple, by snakey: The scene of the sun reflected in the water with a hazy effect on the horizon; the reflections on the calm water were reminiscent of a work by one of the Impressionist artists. The young couple and the dark foreground add to the image by providing good contrast.
