Weekly #631 - Glossy Magazines Competition

Competition Details
Closing Date: 18/08/2019
Judge: davidwozhere

Everyone (hopefully) has access to any number of colourful glossy mags. (That said, they can be photographed in black and white if you wish). Interpretation is absolutely up to you. Take a photo specially for the competition or use one from your archive - the only rule is that it must be taken with a Pentax camera or one of its clones e.g. a Samsung. ......... Closes midnight Sunday 18th.

I was hoping for a few more responses to this one but I will put that down to the time of year since responses to photos posted in the Gallery are somewhat reduced and activity on (e.g.) Ebay is also a lot lower than normal. We got a very varied selection nevertheless.

Face like the back of a bus: Rodney was in first off, as usual with a nice, crisp and bright, well composed illustration that unfortunately could indeed have been the advert on the back of a bus - I may be missing something but I can't relate it to a glossy magazine ?

R.I.P by Aitch53 recalls some bygones in an interesting way - particularly by placing the two magazines at 90 degrees to each other but why was the top of What Digital Camera chopped off when the whole could have been moved down a bit (and, in doing so, avoided including the Canon ad. )

All about Good Housekeeping: Nigelk had me foxed when this appeared. Dropping the magazine on the floor at the foot of the frame was a masterstroke, linking the overall theme of his excellent black and white image to the theme of the contest.

My quarterly magazine by Vic Cross highlights a serious situation for many and some of the wonderful solutions that have been produced. That said, I had to ask myself whether that was indeed the major aim of the image since the photographic element appeared (to me) to be a little basic?

Light and heavy reading by Noelcmn presents a well photographed selection of covers against a pleasant non-competing background. The whole works very well and the thumbnail certainly provokes the question, "what's this about then?" right from the start.

Only nine years by drofmit has pushed the brief (such as it is) to the limits by including modern digital versions of "glossy magazines" as well as their forbears with a quite startling unifying narrative. He has taken considerable pains over his composition too with each element carefully placed and lined up. Also, the brightness of the digital devices and comparatively dull and darker magazine covers have been well balanced in the final image.

First place goes to drofmit for pulling off both a thought provoking concept and super execution of it.
Second to Nigelk for his very clever B&W composition and
Third to Noelcmn for his well photographed and eclectic reading matter.
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

Thank you... thinking cap now going on... congrats to the others... I think you had a hard time judging this... my money was on Nigelk's!
The reason I was able to do this was that I came across the last ever Pentax User magazine at the beginning of the week, while tidying.....
and stewed on it until Sunday morning!!
Thanks for a fun competition....

Congrats Dromfit, agree with all the sentiments of our Judge. I like the throwback to thing photographic. Congrats too to NigelK, and like Dromfrit, my money was on that one. Stunning composition. Thanks for the 3rd spot, chuffed my late attempt paid dividends. I had originally thought of doing just the two TIme magazines, but they are just not glossy enough. Thanks David, for the challenge, and the C&C's, as always appreciated.
Just a bot worried about Dromfit though- Stewing a magazine-all week

Well done to Dromfit for winning the week's challenge. I stopped getting glossy magazines decades ago when I found each year the same content revolved around and around again.

I too would be curious to hear how an advert on the back of a bus relates to a glossy magazine. It had me puzzled all week,
