Description
In this week’s competition I would like to see Winter shots. They could be landscapes, cityscapes, macro shots of frost and ice, maybe people wrapped up warm, people playing in the snow, even something abstract, basically anything that describes the winter months. I look forward to seeing a varied interpretation of your Winter shots and hope there is scope for you all to submit.

Please Remember whoever wins you have to judge the following week's competition, pick a winner and runners up and comment on all the entries. Too many times recently this has not been done.
Also entries must be taken on Pentax, Ricoh or closely related cameras. The competition closes next Sunday at Midnight, British Winter Time.

Thanks and good luck.

Weekly #387 - Winter Competition

Can I thank all of you for taking the time to enter and I have had an enjoyable week judging all your entries. It has also been quite a challenge coming up with a winner and after a lots of thought this are my top three. Congratulation to the winner David for 'Winter feeding' and well done to the runners-up. Finally I would like to wish to all a Happy Christmas and Snap-happy New Year. Thanks again.

The very dead of winter - Perspicador

Interesting shot with great use of silhouette. I like the menacing of nature created by the contrast of the bleak sky and the motion blur on the trees.

Winter Woodland - GlynM

A beautiful capture which has converted well to B&W. Placing the treein the centre of frame adds to a lovely composition. The whole shot captures the winters day very well.

Essence of Hare - drofmit

What a wonderful moment captured in this frame. You can all most hear the rustle of the bushes and the hare tries to escape. The motion blur and blue tones add to the winter feel of, what to me is a stunning image.

Ice Pattern - tyronet2000

A lovely capture of what a first looks to be a bit abstract. Not sure about the focus as is it does seem a little blurred. Would maybe work as a B&W conversion as I find the colour a little distracting.

Winter Wedding Fun - johnriley

A lovely moment captured. The use of shutter speed to capture the snow ball flying toward what I assume is the groom add to the fantastic feel of this shot. The grade of the shot also adds a warmth to what looks a freezing day.

Seasonal clichés, number one… - simonarron

What a quality capture this is. Pin shape focus on the robin which shows off the detail and colour of the subjects feathers beautifully. The shallow DOF and grey tones of the background help bring to life this great image.

Winter feeding - davidtrout

A stunning image and captures the crispness of this frozen morning so well. I really love the band of colour between the frozen ground and trees which gives the image an almost surreal feel. This image really has created and capture the essence of winter.

Black and White - palani

A beautiful portrait, the subject wrapped up warm for the winter. The conversion to black and white works here, however I feel that a little less contrast would pull some detail in to the blacks thus helping to fell of the image.

Ski Lift Wonderland - Sean282

What a delightful capture, the soft light from the hazy winter sun adds to the overall feel of the image. I like the way the long DOF and the composition of the chairlift leads the viewer to the detail of the far background. Really well taken landscape.

Frozen waterfall - michaelblue

Wonderful the use of long exposure in this capture that adds a sense of movement to the frozen waterfall. This has all been done without the loss of detail in the dark area or overexposure of the ice. Beautifully and technical executed capture.

Icy Road - paulb531

The composition of this scene really catches the eye with road disappearing. The conversion to black & white also adds to the pleasing feel of this capture. I love the confusion of snow covered branches which has been helped by the high contrast of the shot.

Nicely judged. Guy - and commendably prompt, too.

A cracking winning entry from David - and compliments to Tim and Paul for running him closest.

Thanks for the podium place, Guy...
You wrote about Winter feeding by davidtrout...
"A stunning image"....
stunning isn't the word!!!
David set the bar a bit high with this...
I thought midweek when there was a long pause after it went up...
that everyone was thinking...
"Cripes by golly! Can't compete with that!!!"

I want this picture as a 3 by 2 on my studio wall...
...
...
three metres by two metres that is!!
Makes me want to go and stand with the shaggy Highlands for warmth.
I like to try and take "monochromes in colour"....
this has given me the incentive to try and look out for "natural colour pop" pictures as well!!
Those shaggy coooos would feel quite at home here this morning...
minus 3 Centipedes and a frost rime on everything.
I'll feed the chickens then go hunting...
the moment the sun is up a tad....
to give that glow.

Saw the winding "Icy road" come up last night...
and walked back over here from my desk humming a well known Beatles tune!!
Never be afraid to talk about your techniques...
"Give a thousand photographers...
the same camera, lens and scene...
and you'll always get a thousand different takes!!"

Thanks Guy for the competition, your swift and detailed comments - and for my win. Thanks also to the other competitors who said kind things about my Highland cattle. Congrats to my fellow podiumers, Paul and Tim.
My one regret was that there weren't more entries, a subject as enticing as this should have attracted a lot more support.
