I thought Paul's shot would be the winner as soon as I saw it!
The detail and quality, particularly under the circumstances, are outstanding!
Well judged Barrie, and thanks for the feedback, especially my HC !!!
Congrats to all who entered particularly the podium places and other HCs

Thanks for that Barrie. It was a good topic and I expected a lot more entries but the quality of those you had to judge was good. Congrats to Paul and Axel and to the HCs.

I thought there was some sort of rule to have lead-ins and open gates to let you into the picture, all failed here. But does it not work well? – yes. I also like the high contrast achieved using the almost white background. Was it snow, frost of some devilish PP?
I always say that rules are there to help beginners grasp the fundamentals. Once these are learned the progressing photographer should then work out where the rules can or should successfully be broken. Without this development photography would merely become a form of painting by numbers.
The IR effect in my picture emerged when I converted it to mono, the spring foliage looked really light so I took it on from there.

Many thanks Barrie, a good competition with plenty of scope. Needless to say I'm well chuffed.
I was bored on the flight home from Menorca this Saturday when I resorted to experimenting with the camera. It always pays to take a camera with you.
Congratulations to the other placings - some cracking photos out there.
Regards

great contest with amazing entries - I love the winner shot (looks very retro somehow). Time travel is also a very lovely shot.

I’m sure you are all aware that looking at images and picking the ones you like is a very personal thing, so my comments are really based only on my taste.
It so much wanted to transport it..... - AxelLuther
Wow, what away to start the competition. A real eye catching image with its rich colour and fantastic detail drawing you in. I think putting the shuttle in its “natural” environment really enhances the shot, wish I could do it.
To and from Barrow-in-Furnace - mudge
This suits the letter box form very well and the vibrant colour of the subject stands out well against the muted background. Would you be better off with both ends of the bridge in?
Charcoal carrier – michaelblue
I still have not worked out if the bicycle is parked or being ridden. The thing that makes it for me is the orange bottle, if it had just been a bit sharper.
Talyllyn railway – Perspicador
You have done a good job with the exposure here with all that shade. It’s difficult to portray things leaving. Especially when, for me anyway, in this case your eye follows up from the front of the train to the back
Bicycles on Light Poles – drobbia
I don’t know how you have achieved it but the colour and the halo around the cycles really make them stand out. Was it not possible to have the front two cycles completely in the shot?
Tang Tang Hong Kong Transport – conexus
That tram is pin sharp as is the back drop. But I can’t get away with the colour pop treatment; to me it leaves the subject with a cardboard cut out effect. I would have liked to see a full colour version, maybe using a closer crop to emphasise the tram.
Full steam ahead – LancashireLad
Great lead in to the subject and the focusing enhances that crisp cold winter feel. The space in front of the engine and the plain sky also help it stand out.
all aboard – ken2390
Nothing wrong with the kit lens then! Maybe a touch more space at the front, giving the boat somewhere to go.
Police Bike – billyspad
Well focused and exposed, which shows in the amount of detail to be seen and mulled over. Like how is the battery held in!! A great study in well used dilapidation, makes me wonder how the police look in their uniforms.
Time travel – davidtrout
I thought there was some sort of rule to have lead-ins and open gates to let you into the picture, all failed here. But does it not work well? – yes. I also like the high contrast achieved using the almost white background. Was it snow, frost of some devilish PP? Have you tried a crop at the rear of the last whole carriage?
Piccadilly Station - johnriley
Exactly the opposite to “Time travel”, lead in lines everywhere taking you right to the back of the picture. I’m amazed by how much sharpness and detail you have retained in the transfer from print to digital for example, the bolts holding the canopy together.
Having a rest – walkeja
It’s an unusual take on colour popping, having the refection show up the colour again, which I quite like. I have not been to Fradley Junction to know if it’s possible to move along the bank and get a full view of the boat from the front. I think things just look better from the front.
Escalation – GlynM
The lines are the thing here which, highlighted by the bright steel work, take you up into the unknown. I think they even overcome that sign. The figures are spread out to give a nice reference for scale and height. A good picture and well done the Q.
Death Ride – Noelcmn
I think you have a strange séance of humour. What can you say about going in for dark shadowy figures, living the high lights, out of the blue, a picture cut back to the bone. (all puns intended)
Boeing 747 – paulb531
Another image with very strong lines. I think it’s also a good candidate for the B&W conversion knowing how bland aeroplane interiors can be. The thing that makes it for me is the little screen on the seat back, hinting at where those lines can take you.
Police Escort on the A66 – Blythman
I wonder, from the looks you’r getting, who the escort was for! A well timed shot having the three transports separated and the reducing heights adds to a feel of depth in the image. Would a lift in the shadows bring out some more in the caravan drivers?
An Early iPod - drofmit
Looks a bit precarious, but maybe like the picture it’s well balanced. It also goes to show that all those modern day pixels are not necessarily required to produce good detail in an image.
And so the results
1st …. Boeing 747 – paulb531
2nd…. Time travel – davidtrout
3rd…. It so much wanted to transport it..... – AxelLuther
Not forgetting HC’s for = To and from Barrow-in-Furnace – mudge = Charcoal carrier – michaelblue = Escalation – GlynM
