Weekly # 723 - Cacti and Succulents Competition

Competition Details
Closing Date: 27/06/2021
Judge: Noelcmn

Welcome to the Weekly #723, and this week it is Cacti and Succulents, I have included the latter as I suspect the former may be a bit difficult for the wet UK . I love visiting the special Cacti or Succulent sections of the local Botanical Gardens around here. Some really photogenic specimens and others provide opportunities for creativity and technique employment.

The Rules as usual:
1. Only Pentax cameras and acceptable clones.
2.The winner is expected to set, judge and preferably offer some comments/critiques of submissions.
3. You are free to use images from your archives or opt to shoot something specific for this challenge.
4. The challenge closes on Sunday 27 7 June 2021 at midnight BST.

Good luck.

My apologies for this late submission, helped someone move today (It’s that time of the month) and that took much of my day. Here are some of my thoughts and results
Perspicador-Teazel – Getting us off to a fab start with this teasel, though technically neither Cacti nor succulent, it appeals immensely with its two tone treatment and wonderful pop of creamy white against all that green. Nice touch with the web and debris.

MHOL190246- a Cactus Flower- and a lovely one it is too, and which I find rather difficult, and as here, somehow seem these flowers are always obscured by something. Lovely colours, super detailed.

Johnwnjr- Cactus Flower, and still more Flowers, this one having an added bonus for composition and an element of juxtaposition. Harsh light on this one? Well handled in any event, though I’m inclined to darken it a bit more.

Jofford- mammilaria. Mama mia-how beautiful is this, with notes of texture, backlighting and composition, combined with an appealing pink, all make for a winning combo. Is it oozing out some Gel? Really good shot!

Simonmac-Prickly- Nice, I like the symmetry and the B/W is just so suitable for this. Details and texture and beautifully sharp too!

Vic Cross- My Pension (Geldbaum)- LOL! Just what I need for a laugh amid a rampant Delta variant of the Covid-19 virus. (We just re-entered Level 4 lockdown-for a 2 week period) Looks such a fruitful tree, and I am quite prepared to forget that I do not have green fingers, and make a serious attempt at cultivating this one. The light seems a quite harsh on this one. Nice composition and details too.

Nigelk-Mallorca Blossom – Kudos for your effort, and paid some rewards, with an especially appealing composition. Looks to me like “queen of the night”. The black background has really brought out the textures and details.

Johnriley-Cactus Roof garden- And some more laughs. I like those miniature houses, that succulent has added even more character to them. Solid composition, colors spot on, and the succulent pops nicely.

1st spot to Jofford-For a great Macro shot.
2nd spot – A closer that you imagine place to johnwnjr- Cactus flowers.
3rd spot to Nigelk Mallorca Blossom.

HM to MHOL190246. A SPECIAL HM TO VIC CROSS. Despite my father telling me for years that money does not grow on trees, Vic has persuaded me otherwise

Congrats to 1st. 2nd. and 3rd. places. Also to MHOL190246.
I'm glad you had a laugh at mine Noel that's what it was there for. My only cactus only flowers at Christmas so I thought I'd have a bit of fun.
Born again biker with lots of Pentax bits. Every day I wake up is a good day. I'm so old I don't even buy green bananas.
