Good competition.
Tough for me as I don't shoot this kind of work. And compromise doesn't always work!
Thank you for your observations and well done folks.

Excellent challenge, excellent choice if a winner- a gritty intense moment captured there Nigel. Congrats! And extended to Davidtrout and Smudge, the latter, which as noted, is a nice bit of nostalgia. It has been many years since I've seen one of those. Thanks to our judge for comments and critiques as usual much appreciated.

Well done all round, good competition and some really fine images. Many thanks to Noelm for prompt and insightful comments. Thanks for my second place, the best place to be without the responsibility of running next week's competition.

Chorley
Riveting: Nigelk.
This image was the first out of the hat and really set the scene. It captured the effort that the two workers were putting into riveting the metals together and the slight movement in the hammer showed that it was not just a set up shot. The background gave a sense of place.
Engine Driving: Perspicador
I guess these are two volunteers doing what they enjoy most, driving an engine. Something appears to have gone wrong with the processing of this image, everything seems very soft and the greens look over saturated.
Man And His Hawk :Abraxaz
The low angle works well in this shot….the prey’s eye view of the hawk before it takes off to pounce on it. The house in the bottom right corner adds nothing to the image and could easily have been cropped out.
Harris Tweed Weaver : smudge.
Keeping alive a cottage industry with a classic product that has world wide appeal. An excellent record shot of the weaving shed. Would have preferred to have seen all his face and not had him adjusting his glasses.
Pro-cyclists: JAK.
This shows the effort the riders are putting in to round the bend and climb the hill. The half van and cut off people in the background are a little distracting and take attention away from the cyclists.
Spinning Rainbows: tyronet2000.
I like the way the slow shutter speed has captured the movement in the wheel as the lady spins her thread. I would however had preferred if you had shot from a lower angle so as not to appear to have overpowered her by looking down on her. It would also have helped if you could have caught her attention so she was looking at you and not someone else.
RNLI Fundraiser: johnriley
A very colourful image with a volunteer for a very good cause. His/her bright colours allow him/her to stand out well from the background
Smelting Iron: poliver
Even though this was a model, 2 extra stops exposure at the taking stage or in a raw conversion programme would have brought out some detail in the foreground brickwork and put this image up among the winners. Unfortunately it is just too dark to see its full potential.
Lovely Watermelons: vic cross
Can’t work out what happened with this image. You must have re-photographed a print or slide from your old Z1p with your K-1 but can’t fathom out why you would have needed such a high ISO (51200) The noise or grain from the film has produced a very poor quality image.
Bishop At Work: davidtrout.
I haven’t been entering these competitions very long but long enough to realize that David does take excellent church interiors and this image is no exception. A super record of the Bishop ‘at work’.
Mime Artist: retsoor
A good shot of the Mime Artist, sharp and plenty of detail. However there is far too much clutter around him most of which could have easily been cropped out.
Drips Don’t Get Wet : stu62
The gardener has been well captured putting the finishing touches to the wall (hope the local H&S Inspector doesn’t see this picture). The light triangle in the bottom right hand corner is distracting and could again easily be cropped out.
Work: Noelcnm
The workman stands out well from the clear blue sky but a tighter crop would have given him more prominence.
Driver: Simonmac
Another two enthusiasts enjoying themselves on an old steam engine. Unfortunately detail has been lost in both the highlights and shadows which has let the image down.
Winner: Riveting: Nigelk, For capturing the effort of the workers and the movement of the hammer.
2nd place: Bishop At Work: davidtrout. For another quality image which filled the brief.
3rd place: Harris Tweed Weaver: smudge. For capturing a piece of history
HM’s RNLI Fundraiser: johnriley, Pro-cyclists JAK
