Monthly Competition #9 - Reflection Competition

Thank you all for your entries which I have tried to judge according to what I asked for when I set the competition, that is, an image of a reflection and also showing the subject. that was being reflected. It wasn't a simple task sorting out the podium places.

A good image capturing the details of the subject and reflection which fulfills the brief.

Washing line reflections by pixelshot
I can see reflections of something in the water droplets and can only assume it's washing on another unseen line.
The brief was to show the reflection and some of the actual subject so this image doesn't fulfill that.

Swan by AndyS
A stunning shot capturing the detail of both the swan and reflection. Ticks all the boxes.
If I had to nitpick I'd say the small item floating below the reflection of the head could have been removed.

Telegraph Pole in the Snow by davidstorm
An original idea to take a "view spoiler" and make it a feature. I just wonder if you couldn't have moved around to the left of the water and got more of the reflection in a portrait orientation? Well spotted and ticks the boxes.

A good effort, the reflections of the included buildings and trees fill the brief, but I think in this case the fence, especially the post in the foreground is distraction.

Street in the shop window by velimir
The street is certainly reflected in the window but is rather spoilt by the products and labels. The brief was to show some of the original subject as well as the reflection so perhaps this shot taken from a different point of view may have better achieved this.

An almost there image. The reflection of the people in the shop window has them appearing to be inside the shop and if you had also managed to catch the actual shopper in the image it would have completed the brief.

At first glance this looks like an image that was flipped horizontally in photoshop or some such. Doesn't show any of the actual subject so doesn't fill the brief.

The reflection of the kitchen with just enough detail of the subject, ie the wall tiles and hob included ticks the boxes of the brief.

Another image which only half fills the brief ie a great reflection but nothing showing of the actual subject .

If the puddle on the left had been larger you would have had a double

This image ticks all the boxes of the brief, good reflection and included subject. Well spotted.

An image which shows an understanding of the brief, the reflection and the main subject both in the image.
I do feel the sky could have been cropped, say at the level of the top of the dominant cloud on the left.

The image shows a reflection but nothing of the actual subject being reflected, so doesn't fulfill the brief.

Not sure about the reflection at the rear, I'm assuming this is the passer by in the title, which as best I can make out is the reflection of the back of her head whereas the reflection of the cameraman is also facing front. As the brief was for reflection and subject this doesn't work.

This image certainly fills the brief and I like the way it has been rotated clockwise 90° to make an abstract. Well thought out.

A good image, the converging reflection of the handrails and corridor giving depth. The difficulty I'm having with this image is deciding if it's all reflection or part reflection and part subject. I have finally decided that the right side of the image is a reflection of the left side.

An image that exactly fulfills the brief. The detail is preserved in the shadows and the tones in the subjet and reflection look spot on, I wish it had been possible to have a joint first place that is how close this image was to being the winner, If I had one tiny criticism I'd say the image is just a little tight to the frame at the bottom.

The Bridge by rromero
An image which fills the brief by showing the reflection and subject so clearly, the only slight fault is the amount of noise in the sky due to the high ISO used.
I don't know how much control you would have regarding this with the camera used.

This image certainly ticks the boxes of the brief and I like the way the trees keep the interest on the subject and reflection

Passed into Future
You've certainly captured a lot of reflections in this image but it is difficult to see if it consists of all reflections or if the actual subject is in there too.
It does look very "futuristist" which is what I think you were trying to achieve

Yes the reflection is good, even includes a bird, but the brief was to include the subject being reflected as well.

This amusing composition has the required reflection and subject in the image. I feel that the out of focus figure on the right looks a bit odd and would have been better placed in the background keeping the cental figures in focus.

Canal Fishing by nicesparky
This image certainly has plenty of reflections so more than fills the brief. As the title is canal fishing I would have tried to give more emphasis on the fisherman by, say, cropping the van off.

Stainless balls...by Jim-w
The balls are the subject and are reflecting other balls so that is the brief fulfilled but I wonder if it wouldn't have been better to focus on fewer balls that had the balls reflected in them.

I liked the idea of this image, using the colours of the fairground as the subject and reflection. It fits the brief and is well taken.

Malaysian morn by simonarron
Another image using a light source as the subject, the sun, and the sunlight on the water as the reflection. therefore fits the brief and probably not an easy exposure to take.

Thanks for the "Joint Third"... The branch just looked wooden [aaargh! ] when it was normal... then I leant down to retrieve something from the floor... and all suddenly became clear!

Found it, at last. Thanks for the HC. Best result I've had for years and a good explanation on each photo as to why you chose or otherwise. Thanks.

Got my first HC on my first entry photo. Thank's. It will keep me inspired and motivated. The review and comments is helpful for more improvement.

Hopefully AndyS will turn up soon to set the next competition, I have sent a message to remind him.

Working on the idea that AndyS might have gone away for the week, I'll give him till Saturday night to return and look at posting a new subject on sunday if he hasn't shown by then.
