Monthly #94 - Isolation Period Competition

Competition Details
Closing Date: 30/04/2020
Judge: paulb531

This will be a strange month in our lives - the like we have never known before. We will be restricted in what we can usually do. Therefore this months competition is about documenting this period of isolation and how you, or others are coping with it, or not. It can be indoors - perhaps your work out routine or macro photography of familiar objects. Or, it could be a photo opportunity when on your trip to the shops or on your daily exercise trip.

I am looking for inventiveness as well as technical competence.

Have fun and I look forward to your submissions.

Thanks to all who entered. The subject has produced a wide interpretation of the Isolation period. Here are my thoughts.

Social Distancing
A clever concept. I suppose scaled down they are more than the 2 metres required.

The Isolated Pastor
I like how in this photo you have managed to get everything symmetrical. A lot of rich tones and just enough light to light up the room. Is that you in the picture Noel? Perhaps it would have been more impact if you were more prominent.

And I guess I just donít know
I think its either an inspired masterpiece or its just a picture of a wall Ė who knows? Perhaps the lockdown is getting to some more than others.

English Rose
A still life very nicely done. I donít profess to be a fan of still plants but I appreciate the quality of this entry.

A Saturday afternoon
I had a picture like this in my head when I set the competition. What differentiates this period from any other Ė the unusual. The usual busy streets empty of shoppers. Not only empty but a cracking black and white image ticking the boxes. Good composition, and strong shadows Ė nicely done.

Cola Wars
You created something great here in my opinion. Very lively colourful and vibrant. A very striking image Ė excellent.

Dandelion Macro shot
Another fantastic shot. Very colourful and creative image. I have the 100mm / 2.8 WR, I assume this 105mm is an older model?

The Clothes Pins
A descent still life shot spoilt by being a bit fuzzy. The right-hand side of the photo has a pink haze? Perhaps Iím not appreciating the creativeness but I find it a bit off-putting.

Robin
The wildlife certainly doesít know its lockdown. Youíve captured a good sharp image here well done.

Schoolís Out
It certainly is. Parents are having to school their children. This is a good still life shot good composition and well executed. The school being shut is a big part of parents lives with home schooling, a good image of this and pleasing to the eye.

Start
They start young these days. He certainly looks enthralled. Wait while he starts on Minecraft youíll not get him off it. A nicely crafted shot Ė with the defused light lighting up his face.

Physical exercise for lockdown
During the lockdown keeping fit is a major issue. Not sure this combination of keep fit equipment makes a great still life photo though.

Solo Peacock
A nice flower and butterfly image. A pity he couldnít have turned around for you to show markings on both wings.

Edge of My Universe
Each to their own but I hate gardening. I can see the attraction though of getting away from it all. Youíve captured a clean nicely framed image of yourself. It doesnít look a particularly happy shot but who is happy in these grim times.

Iíve picked four photos that best depicts the isolation and very little to choose between them. I have overlooked some well-crafted images that perhaps didnít depict the theme enough.

Winner: A Saturday afternoon by normanp
Second: The Isolated pastor by Noelcmn
Third: Edge of My Universe by jofford and schools out by JAK

Congrats NormanP, agree with our judge, cracking B/W image, worthy winner. And extended to jofford and JAK. Lovely challenge, even if somewhat painful given the mounting frustration worldwide. Thanks for my 2nd spot, I'm chuffed to get that coveted 2nd spot. And yes it is me, and I did a few others, where I am more prominent, but then it becomes more about me rather than the isolation. I'll post one or two to the Forum and perhaps you can judge from that. Thanks for the challenge, excellent as usual, and for the C&C's. Much appreciated as usual.
