Description
My challenge for this month is photographs of street furniture. What do I mean by that? I am looking for fixtures such as cast-iron lamp posts; surface ironwork; pillar boxes; telephone kiosks; cast iron bollards – I leave it up to your interpretation! The images MUST be taken in the month of August 2023 and on Pentax equipment or clones. Good luck and looking forward to some interesting images. I have uploaded an image of a street in Poole as an example that will not be judged

It is always interesting to see the various interpretations Pentaxians make of competition subjects. This competition is no exception. That said, a lovely range of quality images submitted, which always makes judging problematic. Here goes!!

MikeinDevon Bumble Bee Cozies The winner
PRYorkshire Roadworks Second Place
Flan Places to Rest Third Place

I hope that no-one is offended by my choice and comments. Over to you, Mike

Mr Mellow – Cley Beach signpost. A nice start to the competition of a signpost directing visitors to the delights of the Norfolk coast. Good depth of field with the horizon, sky and sea highlighting the signpost. The two bikes on the shingle beach added to the overall composition.

Davidwozhere – Very tall street furniture with the subtitle, ‘The pavement communing with heaven’ made me giggle. A very interesting take on the subject, I love the vanishing point of the pole with the wires radiating from it, the cloud, and the blue sky. The foliage to the left of the photo serve to enhance the overall impression of height and infinity.

Flan – Places to Rest. The use of monochrome in this entry serves to emphasise the street, bollards and of course the raised bed. Great depth of field and the inclusion of the two people and passing traffic serves to add to the overall scene.

Sue Riley – Street Furniture. The height bar to the car park shows an innovative interpretation of the subject. The colour of the hazard bar contrasts nicely with the trees in the background. I do wonder, however, whether the silver car in the background could have been cloned out as it is a trifle distracting. The pedestrians waiting for the “anonymous” vehicle to proceed do add interest to the scene.

John Riley – Street Talk A beautifully composed image of a traditional telephone box bearing a King’s crown to boot! Although I fancy not of our current king! I liked the pot of hydrangeas which contrasted nicely with the red of the telephone kiosk.

PRYorkshire – Roadworks A mildly humorous approach to the subject, unless it happens to be your street that the utility companies are digging up! A nicely composed shot of temporary (well at least you hope it is) street furniture. A sign of modern life

NigelK – The Lamp Post. Using monochrome for this shot serves to emphasise the image of decay and neglect at this site. The slightly forbidding cloud and the distant horizon all add to the feeling of neglect and desertion. Very well composed and an interesting interpretation of the subject.

Nollecmn – the Curve of the Bollards. I do like this entry especially the way in which the bollards curve away into the distance. The image is nicely composed and the use of f18 allows for great depth of field. Interesting street furniture

MikeinDevon – Bumblebee Bollard Cozies – I really like this image which adds an element of amusement to the subject. Well exposed with good depth of field the road bends to the right. The people in the background add to the overall composition.

Drofmit – And a Bathroom Joined in. A nice shot showing an interesting range of street furniture from the no right turn sign; the bin; the information board; the direction sign and the pump. It is obviously a busy street as the arrival of the bathroom shows!!

Michael many thanks for the 2nd place and well done to Mike for a worthy 1st place and also to Flan. Glad you appreciated the slightly tongue in cheek nature of my interpretation of the competition subject.

Thanks for the competition and a subject that got me out of the house specifically to take photos….
Congrats to the winners… especially No1… nice to see a “Bee Aware” town…
And Micheal, the road is exceedingly quiet tbh… one vehicle every couple of minutes normally! I had actually taken the picture, but then saw the lorry, and the subject on the side, and took three more… digital film is effectively free after all is said and done!!
Never be afraid to talk about your techniques...

the same camera, lens and scene...
and you'll always get a thousand different takes!!"

We all need a bit of humour at the moment

With the above response in mind, at least your day was not a complete washout. Glad that the subject appealed to you.

All the best
