Monthly #119 - Light and Shadow Competition

Competition Details
Closing Date: 31/05/2022
Judge: MHOL190246

At this time of year we have some interesting natural lighting effects, so my challenge for this month is to take photographs using light to throw up shadows for example a line of trees lit to cast shadow, thus enhancing the image. Photographs MUST be taken during May and with Pentax cameras or clones. Good luck - looking forward to some inspiring images

Light and Shadow Comp comments
Thanks to all who have submitted entries for the competition. Hopefully the comments made below will be taken in the spirit in which they were intended and will not offend anyone. The quality of entries is, as one would expect from Pentaxians, are all excellent thus making the final decision concerning podium places all the more difficult!! Anyway, here goes!!

The winner is Laburnham Arch by PRYorkshire
Second place goes to Aphid on Osteopernum by loadoftripe
Third place goes to The Burrell Patent Engine by Johnriley
Highly commended goes to A Highlight of Bluebells by Jofford

Jofford A Highlight of Bluebells – this is spot on. The lighting of the Bluebells with the green of the leaves, creates a very pleasing image. The dark trunks serve to highlight the flowers in the woodland setting.

Perspicador From a Very Dark Place – an interesting take on the theme – I can see where you are coming from here. Whilst the nest box is in focus the slightly blurred Blue Tit does enhance the overall image and certainly indicates a rapid exit from the shadowy confines of the nest box.

Davidwozhere Delicate Pink and Deep Darkness – a nicely exposed crisp image of flowers very well enhanced by the deep shadow. A nice, clean shot creating an almost 3D image. Good use of depth of field to further enhance the image. The greens complement the subtlety of the pink

Sueriley The Shadow under wing and truck – a nice candid image of an operative obviously at work. The use of monochrome serves to create a fascinating image which leads to me to wonder what the phone call concerns. We can just make out an undercarriage leg which helps to frame the overall image.

Johnriley The Burrell Patent Engine – the steam emanating from the engine partially concealing the operator helps to enhance the image. I particularly liked the contrast between the well-lit steam engine and the shadow it cast. The people in the background serve to enhance the overall scene. A very nice image which totally fitted the bill.

Loadoftripe Aphid on Osteopermum – a lovely macro image which absolutely fits the brief, pin sharp with great colours. The colour of the flower and pollen complements the aphid well. All in all, a great shot. A subtle approach to the subject

Hazyl Roof at sunset – what a great shot I especially like the diagonal light-coloured bars highlighted by the shadow. Well exposed and certainly within the brief. It is one of those images that takes us outside the box so to speak

Noelcmn Cat and Mouse Games – an interesting approach here with dappled shade on the tree and the ever-watchful cat’s whiskers highlighted by the sun. The mouse making its escape is partially in shadow which adds to the drama. All in all, a lovely interpretation of the theme

Flan Metal Swivel bridge detail – industrial photography is often full of contrasts and this example is no exception. Beautifully composed showing great detail of the elements of the mechanics. I particularly liked the balance of shadow and light with the red wheel adding colour to the monochrome nature of the other components.

PRYorkshire Laburnham Arch – a lovely shot with some interesting colours which serve to enhance the whole image. The two people add perspective to the overall picture with the man’s blue shirt and the lady’s orange dress complementing the greens and yellows of the trees. The dappled shade and border planning adds to the picture

Simonmac Modern Times – the street photography approach adds another dimension to the theme. What looks like a semi-derelict building advertising the local food bank is well lit by the sun whilst casting shadows into the street. The figure crossing the road; the traffic lights; and the van in the background all add to the image with shadow and light being well balanced

Drofmit Flag Petals – a lovely macro shot which fits the criteria for the competition. The colour of the petals is well lit and are complemented by the dark shadow which serve to highlight the flower. A sharp image which is almost 3D

Many thanks Michael for the 1st place and well done to loadoftripe, Johnriley and jofford. A good subject with excellent entries, I would not have liked to have to choose a winner. I will now give some thought for this month's competition.

Thanks for the competition and the rapid adjudycayshun....
Congratulations to the Podia... but as you say, difficult to judge when you have so much variety in very good photos!!
Never be afraid to talk about your techniques...

Great competition and three cracking images on the podium. In the light of those I don't feel in the shade to have got a HC.
