Yeni Cami (New Mosque)

by 1stEverPentax

Situated at one end of the Galata Bridge adjacent to the Egyptian (Spice) Bazaar on the Golden Horn in Istanbul.

Despite being called 'New' it is around 400 years old!

It dates back to around 1597 but wasn't finished until around 1665 due to the unexpected death of the person who ordered its construction...lying unfinished for about 50 years and suffered fire damage to its foundations before eventually being finished by the mother of a much later Sultan.

Very impressive looking at night when i first saw it...I must admit I thought it was the more famous 'Blue' Mosque until my waiter put me straight next morning at breakfast as I gazed out over the water towards it from my hotel restaurant!
