Stairs to nowhere!

This flight of stairs at my dentist's leads straight into a wall.... the original doorway has been bricked in at some point and very crudely mortared over and painted.
The stairs are crumbling and covered with lichens... no one has even bothered to paint the ironwork.... the actual stairs of to the right are in a better state... but probably on health and safety concerns. But, in their own way, I find these stairs rather appealing and mysterious... especially, with the sepia treatment, the old doorway seems to glow like a portal to...... who knows where!
