Bringing home the lunch

Bringing home the lunch

Photo Information
Pied wagtail with food for the family. At Zwin nature reserve in Belgium.

This was taken in less than perfect light, with heavy cloud, after a wet morning. There's almost no shadow, which helps with avoiding the underside becoming too dark compared with the top. The black has lost some detail as it reflects very little in this low light, however if there had been much sunshine, the white would have blown, or there would have been glare unless very lucky with angle. Getting close helps, in this case the 300mm lens and a very helpful subject. At F4, the DOF is quite small, closing down a touch would help, and I'd probably have been just a touch sharper with tripod, although I wouldn't have had any time to use one. Longer exposure would get better detail (and lower ISO), but of course birds don't stay still. Overall I was very pleased with the shading of the grey, and the good contrast without looking harsh. The background is grass at some distance, so just appears as shades of green, so avoids distractions, although the barbed wire is a bit if an intrusion.
