Two Dogs And A Ferry

by noelm

The two dogs belong to the skipper of the ferry and are part of the experience. One normally stays ashore whilst the other one is a four legged member of the crew and travels back and fore (helping where he can). The ferry crosses the Kylerhea narrows between the mainland and the Isle of Skye from Glenelg to Kylerhea. The ferry is the last remaining 6 car manual turntable in operation. The roads over the mountain passes both to and from the ferry give spectacular views and the drive can be quite an experience. The roads follow the old drovers route for moving cattle from Skye to markets in the south. The cattle were swum across the narrows. There is an old Hanoverian Barracks near by (built after Culloden) and the best preserved Pictish Brocks on the mainland just a couple of miles away. The area has everything, beautiful scenery, fabulous wildlife and history. What more could you ask. I have been going for over 30 years and never tire of the place. It is never the same two days running.
