Comma Butterfly

by JAK

Most British butterflies are on the red list to some extent, and this, the Comma was dangerously close to extinction a century ago when hop-farming declined with the loss of village breweries. Nowadays they can often be found feeding on bramble, thistles and knapweed along riverbanks and are believed to have benefited from the changing climate. So while not out of danger, numbers are increasing. But for how long? So a species definitely worth recording for an archive.
The butterfly got its name from the distinctive comma on its under-wing (seen in the photo where it looks like a hair on a print that needs retouching!)
