You could get a K5 and kit 18-55 and be fully weather proof.
Or a K5 and look around for a nice lens to go with it later.
Or look at this CLICKY LINK

I upgraded my K10 to a K20 a couple of years ago and found the K20 to be a reasonable improvement on the K10.
Early this year - I bought a K-r with the intention of using it as a back up for my K20 until I could fund a K5. Problem was - in my hands at least - the K-r totally out performed the K20 in virtually every respect. So - I sold my K20
For the price - the K-r is a truly amazing piece of kit and to answer your specific question "Would the K-r be comparable image wise to the K10" IMHO - no - the Kr will totally out perform the K10 in many ways and be at least equal to it in most others.

No matter how many lenses I have owned - I have always needed just one more

Get the K-5 while you have the chance this opportunity may not happen again! Using it with "lesser" lenses will allow you to pump up the ISO and take much less blurry pictures using a faster shutter speed, instantly clearer pictures.

Personally I'd go for the Kr and some nice fast and sharp lenses - which (IMO) will make vastly more difference to your images than the IQ difference between the Kr and K5. And they will still be there if you upgrade again in the future - when the Kr and the K5 are both 'yesterday's news'.

I'd go for a K-r, and a 70-200 2.8 myself. The lens will easily last me the next 5 years (at least!), while the camera will be lucky to last 3.
Unless of course you need that weather protection.

I'd go for a K-5

Thanks for all your replies.
5 to 3 in favour of the K-r.
Leaning that way myself and maybe think about a K-5 when they depreciate enough or if /when I can afford one.
Time to spend far too long investigating lenses now I guess!
cheers

I'd keep what I got and go for a cruise.

Sad to see it go, but makes room for an eventual upgrade to the K5 or the K4?

Currently have the K10D with the 18-55, 50-200 and a Tamron 70-300.
(Much) younger brother due to start a photography course at college so considering letting him have the K10d and the 18-55 to start him off.
Would the K-r be comparable image wise to the K10(my local jessops has one for £349 inc 18-55 lens) leaving me funds for a lens or three?
Or will the K-5 produce better quality from my (low end) lenses?
Thanks for any input.
