I'm not a big fan of teleconverters, but the 50mm lens is the best lens to use one with. The 50mm f1.7 would be a better choice still though.

The more layers of glass you introduce the lower the image quality.
I tried a 2X adaptor on a 300mm lens, the resulting images were VERY poor. That's an extreme example but it's the same for all lenses to some extent.

I'm not a big fan because the quality is invariably very poor.

I have this one, and its the best 2x tc I've tried. All tc's will reduce some IQ, but this one is not too bad. I also got a quantaray 2x tc (which I suppose is the same as the sigma, usual with quantaray) and in terms of sharpness I see no discernible difference except the tokina gives more purple fringing (nothing to bad).
