This is the best dog portrait I have seen on here in ages, if not ever! Lovely in every way, well done.
Re. sharpening, I suspect that the image simply has the right amount of digital sharpening applied in post processing for viewing at 72dpi.

Thanks all for your kind comments- as to what lens I used....er, I can't for the life of me remember! Normally I would use my trusty old SMC Pentax-A 50mm 1.7 or Pentax-M 100mm macro for this type of shot, however the exif tells a different story- perhaps my Sigma 70-300.
