Thank you so much for your entries.

This as tough now as it always has been!

I've tried to judge this as much for impact as well as, if not more than, technical achievement.

Mi Duck by Perspicador
You have a duck?! Lovely shot. The duck seems quite coy. I like the natural setting. Although I am not always a fan of explanation with photographs I feel that it would have helped here as my curiosity is peaked.

The Sleeper by johnriley
I really like this. It is very impactful, very mischievous. I love the composition. She truly seems a partner in crime! I sense the playfulness and the creativity between the two of you and the relationship is so apparent because of this.

my sons little tart by stu62
I'm a cat lover. We have a rescue at home. Nice shot that shows the cat off well. It doesn't immediately hint at the relationship of which you speak which sounds like great fun.

Must be Love by NigelK
Cats, see above! Love indeed. This cat knows how to butter up its human. A fun shot. Speak to the paw!

Evening walk with my son. by Mag07
What a handsome fellow. It's a shot with an interesting dynamic: there seems to be a distance there, perhaps he is camera shy, perhaps he is at that age where a little posing is not a bad thing. It contrasts with a typical portrait of a child/young adult. I see the light as a metaphor for his mom.

Getting Ready For The Competition by Noelm
Surely a photo that will always be treasured. I would love to have seen the horse's face too but these opportunities are fleeting.

Family Fun by GlynM
Cheers me up viewing this. It is full of character and laughs and joy. Lovely light too. Some might think it a family snap shot but, like every photograph here, it is one that will always recall memories of this moment in time. I want that lens too!

Alex and Bob by AndrewA
Love it. It has an abstract quality but the relationship is clear. If this were a competition about textures it would be a winner.

Win or lose by vejj
Is this a self portrait? Not sure. Difficult to comment if it if you are the subject. It is an interesting photo and although the use of screens to illuminate is well known it works nicely here.

Scarlet by MikeInDevon
It seems a little unsharp because of the very slow shutter speed (a touch of flash from the pop up would have resolved that), the hair is a little cropped. but the eyes have it regardless. A lovely capture.

Source of the food by Abraxaz
This really is lovely. Sharp, nice shallow depth of field. But for me, as much as I have looked at impact, the stripey item to the right keeps tearing my eyes away from this gorgeous child.

Ain't she cute! by Noelcmn
Another strikingly lovely child. My only niggle is the flash which has created shadows and dazzles somewhat.

Well there we are. I'm not good at lengthy observations as I am in the company of my peers.

The winner is:

johnriley
This is such a different take and there is much to enjoy.

Second place goes to:

GlynM
It makes me happy. Thank you.

Third place goes to:

AndrewA
Nice composition, even though it's a dog and not a cat!

Highly commended to:

MikeInDevon, noelm and Mag07

Thank you and goodnight.

Congrats John, lovely shot, and as noted some mischief there! She does seem quite comfortable with the camera. A model in the making? Worthy winner. And congrats too to GlynM and AndrewA and not forgetting the HM'sMikeInDevon, noelm and Mag07. Thanks for the challenge and the comments and critiques Simon. And I expected just that comment about the shadows, nothing I could do about that, as it was cluttered as only a home can be, and getting the family to move around to more suitable environment was just not possible.
