Photography Show NEC 2019
Posted in Pentax Digital Camera Discussion
I was planning to go, but even with a free ticket, I decided not to as there was no: Ricoh, no Adobe ( I wanted to ask a question about CS5 on Windows 10), no Zenfolio, but there were charities and clothes stalls and coffee places and many other peripheral stands Going the way of the high street. Guess the show's on the way out. Sad ...
Irix 150mm Macro
Posted in Lenses for Pentax Cameras
Very many, Steve. Looks like it handles tricky flare conditions well. I have the DFA 100mm and though it's reported as being good in these sort of conditions, I do find it can struggle a bit more than expected. The extra 50mm gives a few extra degrees of view and looks like it might well be better into the sun. I will try and get to the NEC show next month to try the handling as it a bigger lens than I'm used to carrying - this is likely to be the deciding point. You're right about my technique not be dog walking compatible. I've sometimes been known to wait for hours at the same spot if I think the light might fall right - no dog would put up with that kind of abuse !
Irix 150mm Macro

This one for Barry E. Here are a few non-macro pictures, focus ranging from about 20 yards to about 3/4 mile. Done while walking the dog, K3 held by one hand, other hand holding dog on lead and focussing with a couple of fingers, so challenging to say the least! SR on. Aperture and ISO chosen to give exposure time less than 1/(1.5f). Viewfinder with OME53 magnifying eyecup. Minimal processing of DNG files, slight sharpening of raw then sharpen (USM) after resizing to 1200px horizontal. Focussing was easier than I expected, the focus ring rotates smoothly and precisely with a reasonable amount of 'resistance'. The short distance on the focus ring between near distance and infinity means you've got to be careful. But it's possible and should be even easier with a tripod and live view. 1. Focus on gate, guess about 20 yards away 2. Focus on gate, guess about 150 yards away 3. Focus on swans, guess about 3-400 yards away 4. Focus on pole in centre, guess about 3/4 mile away Make of them what you will! SteveVery many thanks Steve that's a big help. I tend to use tripod and manual focus with a loupe, so slooow photography - the limited distance focusing throw is tobe expected, I guess. I'm getting closer to pressing the button as the reports seem to be coming in positively. I really like their 15mm (my only non-Pentax) lens and in my tiny way would like to support Irix for including K-mount.
Irix 150mm Macro
Posted in Lenses for Pentax Cameras
I've an Irix 15mm which I use on a K-1 and it's excellent. The arrival of the 150mm made me consider Irix again. I have a DFA 100mm, but I'm looking for more reach, but not at macro distances. All the reviews and comments I've read are about the Irix for macro work, but what is it like for non-macro - up to infinity ? I like using the DFA 100 to pick out elements in a landscape, but there are times when more reach would be nice and the 100 does flare a little. So I'm trying to find out what the Irix is like for non-macro and also when shooting into bright light. Many thanks for any clues or pointers ...
Cameraworld ?

Thanks folks. That's encouraging...
Cameraworld ?
Posted in Lenses for Pentax Cameras
Anyone had any dealings with them ? SRS don't stock Irix lenses and Cameraworld are one of the Irix dealers - the only ones to be at NEC. So far they've scored poorly as they've not replied to my request for info. Not so good. But are they otherwise OK ?

Just to add, Photoguard seem to be a little hopeless in responding to emails, in my experience so far. I'd have thought they would be interested in selling their product. Seems not. Eventually went with aaduki. Their response and help in setting my insurance was streets ahead of the others (many) I enquired to. Of course, this means little if they are turn out to dreadful in dealing with claims. Hope I never need to find out ...

Or phone s rs as they are agents if memory serves me rightSRS would be my first choice. Unfortunately they are not a distributor. I found out there are a few listed at the Irix site after all (I had not drilled down far enough), only I don't know any off them. I'm thinking it will be the NEC to take a look ...

Photoguard defines an pro as earning over 50% of income. So on this basis I'm easily an amateur. Looks like an OK option. Reading the policy docs it seems to cover what I need. I've a few questions about how to allocate some gear to be insured and some not, as like many I've got a few items that rarely ever get used, so I'd want to exclude them. Overall it looks a reasonable option ... They will be at the NEC ...

Thanks John. I'll take a look ...
Any thoughts on price drop of current k-1 ?
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
Srs have the K1ii at 1699 and the K1 at 1999So there will be a drop for the K-1 I assume from this price anomaly. It's just what ...I'd prefer the K-1.

Hi John, thanks. I use your reviews at ephotozine as my first source of info. Then I ask to get the 'feel'. The feeling seems to be positive towards this lens. I'm inclined now to go and handle it at the NEC show next month and see if there are any offers.

Hi John, I have public liability cover so I'm OK there. It's the equipment cover I'm looking at. Rob, "earning a living?". I wish ;-) Yes HMRC is involved, and I earn a little after costs at shows etc., but there's a big difference in risk between what I do and what a proper pro does - this is where I'm trying to quantify.

Is there anyone here who sells there images, say at craft shows and/or stock, for instance, got insurance cover ? Home insurance companies seem to define someone who sells their photos as 'professional', not distinguishing between someone who wonders around with a camera taking a few shots and them selling them at a craft fair and someone who covers, say the Winter Olympics. So before I start asking photo insurance companies their view of what constitutes a 'professional' as there anyone here with a view on insurance cover ? I feel I may be persuading myself to go to the NEC again this year to ask these questions of the reps and also to look at the Irix 15mm (I've just posted a question here). I wasn't planning this, but maybe it might be good approach. Getting advanced info would help ... Many thanks

Anyone got any experience with the 15mm Irix ? Living down in Hampshire there's not many dealers nearby to try them and anyway the ones that don't supposedly supply them have to order them in. There's an option to go to the NEC next month, perhaps, but I wasn't planning to go there this year, though this lens possibility may persuade me. I'm looking for a lens that is optical good at around 15mm, that is not as heavy as the 15-30. The Samyang doesn't seem to be quite as good and reportedly has issues with batch variations. So anyone used a 15mm Irix ? Thanks.
Any thoughts on price drop of current k-1 ?

The pre-release price of the new k-1 is currently being shown as the same as the current k-1. So my expectation is the current k-1 will drop in price. Any clues or ideas to when and by how much ...

If you're post processing screen size is limited and/or your colours don't match this is likely to be a big boost in your ability to work your images. I'm already set-up with a decent pair of monitors, so this is the reason I'm selling this new beast. I'll being trying ebay this weekend - I think I now have it set-up ready to advertise ... As far as delivery is concerned, I am willing to drive a reasonable distance, perhaps meeting half way, if this facilitates a sale. So what are you waiting for :D

I'd recommend Gumtree, you'll have a much large audience than here. I have had huge success selling on Gumtree over the years. I even get sales to people in my neighbourhood after seeing my ad. :)Thanks Steve. I'll take a look. Just thought about local camera clubs. Shows how savvy I am about selling stuff.

Re-advertising based on advice received here. Seems my previous attempt would have made delivery an issue. Obvious really, with hindsight. Anyway here goes again, this time without the delivery restriction and with the reduced price. For sale: New. Unopened. 40" 4K Ultra HD LCD, professional, curved, ultra-wide colour gamut display - Philips BDM4037UW (Amazon price 549, rrp around 670). I was lucky enough to win it in a competition, but I've decided to 'convert' it to an alternative product, ie another Pentax lens or more sensibly, RAID storage. I'm looking for offers around 400. Anyone interested ? And now for delivery: If you're interested please contact me and we can work out delivery. I may be prepared to drive to deliver it. It is still in the cardboard box that it arrived in from the Netherlands. I haven't even lifted it out, so I guess I could just seal it up and send it via courier. Let's see if anyone is interested this time around. Thanks

Yes, most people here don't live near Hampshire! A postcard in the local newsagent for sale ads might elicit a better response, and/or the local paper. If you just want to get it out of the way with little hassle, what about Cash Converters or similar?Seems you may be right as has been mention. Never thought of Cash Converters. I'll take a look.

Hi Barry - I suspect part of the reason will be the no delivery option - a lot of people wouldn't be prepared to travel too far unl;ess it was an absolute "must have" for them. Also this is a limited forum for this type of item, If you can give it a bit of time and spread the word a little further it'll go eventually :wink:Maybe you're right. Maybe I'll offer to drive it to a buyer. Thinking on that ...

OK it seems this is not wanted. Anyone care to let me know why, as it does seem to be a bargain for a brand new, pro-grade monitor to admire your lovely Pentax shots:wink: I don't have the desk real estate for it, which is my problem. Guess I'm going to have to learn how to use ebay ...

Bump. Is this what I need to do when I reset something like the price ? Anyway. My price floor is 400 for this pro monitor. The rrp is around 670, so 400 for a brand new monitor shipped from Philips this week, seems fair. Guess I'll have to start searching outside of our community, if this interests nobody here.
