A Peacock Butterfly

Photo Information
A peacock butterfly Inachis io on blossom in fields near Oxford. The "eyes" on its wings may have evolved to deter predators. But they may also have evolved as an aspect of sexual selection. I'm not sure that anyone has the definitive answer. Evolution is still full of mysteries.
