Galatea at Kirkby Stephen

by davidtrout

Jubilee Class express steam loco Galatea powering up the gradient at Kirkby Stephen on its way to Ais Gill summit on the Settle and Carlisle Railway on Saturday. Pete Weber photographed the same train, the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express, at Ais Gill a few minutes after I got this shot.

I like the immediacy that the head on view gives this. Though the Sun is more on the far side of the train, you have got plenty of light to illuminate the smokebox and the exhaust has plenty of detail to show how hard she is working already.

Our respective EXIF data shows that there was 15 minutes of hard slog between our respective captures and she was breathing hard when she reached me near the summit.

Yes, I'm just out of shot in the frame, bottom right, of your photo taken at the same time and place.

You got me with the steam. The muted colours of the environment cause the heavy metal to pop.
