I think it is a robber fly (Machimus cingulatus), they are a particularly nasty creature and will tackle a dragonfly twice their own size, knock it out of the sky, and set about eating it!

Gary,

You've got to stop posting images like this: at least until my Dictionary of Lesser Known Superlatives arrives from Amazon

Although you have been generous enough to share some of your 'tricks' with me, I'm convinced your holding back something key which allows you to capture such normally flibbertigibbet creatures at high resolution and magnification. I think I've now narrowed it down to one of the following:

a) you work in partnership with the U.K's top Entomological Hypnotist

b) you carry a can of freezing spray which temporarily renders the subject motionless, or very nearly so

c) you have entered into a Faustian pact with that well known amateur entomologist Mephistopheles, who has granted you the power to momentarily freeze time for insects and other small life forms in exchange for your soul, photographic archive (including transfer of copyright) and Pentax equipment when you arrive

So come on Gary, which of the above is it!

Regards,

Jon
