Our mushroom walk taught us that the fruiting bodies we see as fungi are literally just the tip of the iceberg. Under the soil, the mass of mycelium connects all the fungi we see and its total weight in any woodland exceeds the weight of the trees. Fungi are not plants or animals, but a kingdom in their own right. Fascinating stuff.
