Reach For The Sky

RAF Lightning at the Cold War exhibition at the Cosford museum. Brilliantly staged exhibition. Back in the day, I recall seeing these magnificent machines going vertical after take off at airshows.

I remember the vertical climb as well. Boy was it noisy!

That really WAS something to behold. I too remember it. The exhibit here might look OTT to some modern viewers but that's exactly what these things did.

They were incredible machines. I grew up a few miles from Wattisham airfield that had a squadron of these bad boys, the speed and the noise!!! Back then they often flew them so low over our houses, everything shook. Blinking rockets with bits of wing bolted on

Nice shot of a truly great aircraft. Top speed of about 1500mph, ceiling of about 70,000'...British aerospace engineering at its best given this was in the 1950s...performance of today's fighter aircraft at the extremes of their envelopes are only broadly similar...60 years on...unless you believe the rumours of the secret space fleet under the auspices of Solar Warden.

Brilliant aircraft and you have captured it well.
Looks like an interesting exhibition.

Lovely, lovely piece of engineering and a great shot of same!

Reminds me of our own gorgeous and powerful Avro Arrow, which was also 50 years ahead of its time, but still got chopped by Canadian Prime Minister Diefenbaker just as it was about to go into full production.

There are several of them in various states of repair at the Coventry air museum at Baginton Airport just off the A45 jnc A46. (They have a Vulcan too).
