It's a lacewing. Slightly different to the UK ones but if you get them in the right light their eyes reflect the most gorgeous ruby red.

David, not quite... yes, it is Neuroptera, but not a lacewing... it is one of the Mantispidae.... the Mantid Flies....
this one isn't Mantispa styriaca... the three flashes at the end of the wing tell me that... as does the short "neck".... actually part of the thorax and the front pair of legs are at the head end... they are folded forward exactly like a praying mantis..... they occur all over the world. Five species in Europe, but none [yet] in the UK.
And their eyes are even more spectacular.... that lacewing red in the middle and blue rays at the outside
Never be afraid to talk about your techniques...

Horst, where was this taken, please?
There are some 45 Australian species.....
Ditaxis biseriata is very close, but only seems to have one yellow and one marroon flash at the wingtip.
Belay that.... found it:
Ditaxis meridiei [it has the three flashes marroon, yellow, marroon!

Thanks for your detailed information.

I camped near Woodspoint Victoria at Lazarinies Spur, on the Goulburn River
Have a look at this link on google maps:

This area was big on Goldmines. There is the A1 Mine which still operates. I have found some too while panning in the river. This is a very beautiful area with many wild flowers and a great variation of insects
Some bite and some don't.
I posted a picture of the Goulburn River beside my camp for you on the Gallery.
Regards, Horst
