A simple egg

It works for me, good lighting and a nice dark background isolate the subject brilliantly. The only slight negative for me is the reflection on the eggcup base, but this is something very hard to control.

You're right about the reflection --- and it's being hard to control. You will perhaps notice the large linear white object on the right -- which is the image of the white reflector I used to bring some of the flash onto the front of the subject; if I had a VERY large piece of same all around the camera, I could have blocked the reflection of the window behind me. Or if I had a large black cloth behind me...etc etc etc.
Your comment has motivated me to do this shot over again sometime with the goal of eliminating most of the reflections on the surface of that very very shiny eggcup. Meanwhile, I am going looking online to see how others have managed that trick.

This opportunity to learn from other photographers is a major reason why I as attracted to Pentax User.

I hear you Paul: this is an issue of taste, and some truly great photos have involved "distracting" reflections. But in this case, my number one subject was to be the shape and colour of the egg, and I had hoped to keep the white and black "pure" and without "content". So on my terms, in this particular situation, I fell short of my goal.
