Just lovely. Would you recommend the 16-85mm Nigel, and why? I am looking for a replacement for my Tamron 17-50mm.

go4IT, I'd recommend the 16-85mm without hesitation. I'd call it a fantastic workhorse of a lens. The zoom covers a great range that covers the vast majority of my photography, The sharpness is good to very good at all focal lengths when stopped down a little also, when stopped down a little the sharpness is very good across the frame. I also have the 18-135mm which is very nice, sharp in the centre of the frame but this drops of so quickly as you move towards the edges of the frame, it produces nice snaps. I haven't used it since getting the 16-85, I also have and no longer use the Pentax DA* 16-50mm which can capture some great shots but is I believe fundamentally flawed and not worth the extra money, its output is so variable and it's plain soft wide open, perhaps I've got a bad copy.
I guess for you the question is do you need a larger aperture? For me I don't, seldom do I use lenses wide open, I'm happy to raise my iso when needed.
It's a very good lens, I think you'll struggle to find a bad review.

I appreciate the time and effort you put into your reply Nigel. Your comments have convinced me this lens is for me (who rarely shoots with large apertures either, since higher ISO is so excellent these days). I was particularly interested to read your comments on alternatives you have already explored and “rejected” in favour of the 16-85. I note also that you use your KS2 fairly often, which is my only camera and one I treasure, so I expect that combination will work for me as well. I look forward to acquiring the 16-85.
