The Tree Buddha, Ayutthaya, Thailand

by steven9761

This statue-head was apparently discovered inside the roots of the tree in the photo. It is believed to have been placed at the roots of what was then a smallish shrub during the Khmer period many centuries ago.

When I saw the brickwork buried within the roots, I wondered if this was perhaps (at the time) a sapling growing next to a temple wall. It seems that there is nothing in the geological surveys done in the area suggests that this was a temple wall, or even the outer wall of a buddhist monastery... I think we need to get Tony Robinson and the Time Team over there!
