F-4E Phantom 2

by 1stEverPentax

Hellenic Air Force F-4 departing RIAT.

Operated by 338 Mira...apparently the last European F-4 unit still operating the type...guessing the Turkish ones are considered 'Asian'.

The Greeks operate these in the Ground Attack role and plan to fly them until 2027.

I AM DROOOOOOLING!!!!!!

The Phantom proves the aerodynamic theory.... that with enough power you can fly a brick!!

Was a treat seeing F-4's in flight.

One of the main reasons I went with my son on the 'departure monday' rather than for the actual display as the F-4s were in static display.

I've seen F-4s flying many times in the past but my son never has and they have a lot more character than today's 'plastic' looking jets.

From a purely photographic point of view the F-35 must be about the most boring, unattractive jet to capture.

I've heard that theory about the flying brick Spad...I suspect it is probably right!

I guess the F-104 was a primary example of the flying brick principle! As they used to say if you want to acquire an F104 buy a plot of land and wait! I like F-4s!

F.104...aka 'Widow Maker' or 'Flying Coffin'.

They used to be impressive at airshows though.

On more than one occasion in the 1970s I was present when they went supersonic briefly at low level...they were the days!

We could discuss Lightnings but that is for another time, and place!
