Nice work - well spotted. You get great results from this little camera. Do you think the MX-1 is a better option than the Ricoh Gr? I'm looking for a carry anywhere camera.

Thanks Paul. The MX-1 is an annoying little camera to use: painfully slow in operation, far too big for a compact (my Canon EOS M is much smaller and it has an APSC sensor), and the screen looks as if it's been fitted by a blacksmith. BUT it's uncannily brilliant at interpreting a scene, has a great, sharp lens (you even get some bokeh) and it shoots RAW which means if (and it rarely does) get the white balance wrong you can sort it out and stretch the dynamic range quite shamelessly.

I'd say the brilliant sensor in the GR would produce DSLR quality images but that excellent fixed focal length lens is far too wide and restrictive for all but landscapes, large groups or architecture. Much as I love wide angles the 35mm (equivalent) prime on my Canon is much more adaptable but the modest zoom on the MX-1 means you can take it anywhere and it'll do a shift. I've taken it abroad as my only camera three times this year and never regretted it.

I'd say the GR is a wonderful indulgence like my Z3 but the MX-1 is a Skoda Octavia: perhaps not the camera you dream of owning but one which you need.
Best wishes,

Andrew

Thanks for that Andrew. since my Nikon Coolpix 5100 packed I have looked to replace it. With the Pentax K50 body down to £300 I don't feel inclined to spend more for poorer quality cameras just because they are small even though I know I will have to.

I know what you mean but we aren't professionals and we don't routinely try to produce enlargements to fill billboards, so if the shots look good enough on a computer screen then they are good enough.
Best wishes,

Andrew

Did Andrew swear? Canon indeed! I enjoyed my Octavia a few years back! Love the Spanish Rick Stein!
