Old Man of Storr, Isle of Skye
by mcrtchly
Skye’s most dramatic geological feature is undoubtedly the Trotternish Ridge escarpment, formed during a series of landslips, which runs almost the full length of the Trotternish peninsula for some 30 kilometres. It contains Skye's most famous landmark - the Old Man of Storr - an isolated gnarly basalt pinnacle, which featured in the opening scenes of Ridley Scott’s blockbuster movie, Prometheus. We braved Arctic conditions in the dark to climb the 2km 350 metre ascent to the Pixabay viewpoint to catch the dawn over this iconic landmark. Thank goodness for down jackets, woollen long johns and ice spikes!! The wind was ferocious, and our fingers were totally numb working the cameras, but we were treated to a truly memorable sunrise making the haul up there really worthwhile. This is just one of many shots we captured. Can you see the two climbers?
