Leopard earthballs

These puffball-like fungi puff their spores out of the opening on their crowns. The outer covering is like a leathery sack but their claim to attention is the amazing patterning on this sack. Look closely at it, particularly the one on the right.

They are easily overlooked as they are low to the ground and look a dirty mud colour from a standing position. Not a good idea to prod them either !
