Storm Portal
Photo of the Week by morpheus71
This was photographed during the copious wind-driven snows of Storm Emma as it's moist air collided with the 'Beast from the East' Siberian winds (resulting from a recent Sudden Stratospheric Warming / Polar Vortex split).
The winds were fierce and the falling snow incessant as I made the photo. Though I was cosy in my mountaineering clothing and boots.
The illumination of the holloway was from 'light-painting' using a 5700 lumen CREE L.E.D. bike light.
Very dramatic...Like it lots!
Many thanks for your kind words and enthusiasm Ged 😊 I got a little bit of relative shelter being in the sunken lane😂 Bit crazy walking out in the countryside during a Met office Red Warning ⚠ but I have the right gear and years of winter mountaineering experience experience😊

Very effective picture - and somewhat dedicated going out there with a tripod and camera kit no matter your warm clothing!
Many thanks for your kind words David. I had dreamt of seeing the holloway laden with snow many times and upon this rare chance, I decided to go and see it for real. It was a fascinating experience and the ambience of deep time was palpable
Very nice & very effective.

Many thanks for you kind words Swarf
Well done A nice POTW
Many thanks for your kind comments Giulio I felt a visceral yearning to go and explore the green lane that night and so glad curiosity won! Chuffed to get the Photo of the Week
Very effective.
Many thanks for your kind comment Andrew
Lovely atmospheric shot.
Many thanks Nigel It was a delight to go and make this photo that I had dreamt about so many times.
A worthy winner of POTW, it has beauty and mystery and also perfectly sums up recent weather conditions.

Many thanks for your generous and enthusiastic comments David I have been long under the spell of these ancient sunken conduits through the hills, so it was a delight to see this one I have slowly come to know - in conditions I had never witnessed it in before
A well deserved POTW!
Many Thanks GedG
Great POTW Phil!
Many thanks Andy
Congratulations - very well deserved.

Many thanks Swarf
Wonderful atmospheric image. I wouldn't be surprised to see a headless horseman! Sally
Man thanks for you kind comments Sally... though the last part may make me more spooked next time I visit the holloway after dark on a mountain bike ride or photography exploration
It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera… they are made with the eye, heart and head. Henri Cartier-Bresson
Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.
Great image indeed.
Many thanks Womble
