Flying Scotsman back on track
by davidtrout
After a multi million pound rebuild the historic express steam loco Flying Scotsman returned to the main line on Saturday. The 1920s engine (not to be confused with the train of the same name) ran the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express from Carnforth, up the West Coast Mainline to Carlisle and back via the Settle and Carlisle trans Pennine line. Its the world's first steam loco to officially top 100mph, although there were many unauthenticated claims for this title. Owned by the National Rail Museum the engine has been in workshops at Bury Lancashire for the past few years being restored for main line charter work. Its now cleared for 75mph running.
I caught it speeding towards Oxenholme, Cumbria, getting a fast run at Gayrigg and Shap summits on its way to Carlisle. Huge crowds turned out to watch the train pass, the weather was terrible and the auto focus on my DA*200mm lens was playing up. It'll have to go to Johnsons methinks.

A majestic shot. I quite like it in this BR form.
Best wishes,

Love how the red and black really pops against the steely grey...in thumbnail, I thought it was a focal color in a B & W. great shot!
Cheers...Donna 😊

Another superb take David. The telephoto compression of depth makes for a very strong image

Very impressive. I have seen a large number of photos of Scotsman on various forums since her return but this is the standout shot for me.
