West Coast Steam

by davidtrout

Mainly for Peter Weber, but any other steam fans are welcome to view this.... its Class 5 steam loco Lancashire Fusilier approaching Oxenholme at speed as it gets a run at the climb to Gayrigg on the West Coast Main Line with the first Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express of 2015. This train should have been double headed along with Jubilee Class Leander but this had failed a fitness to run test. The Class 5 was running well ahead of time but I suspect it was getting a little help from the Class 47 diesel loco on safeguard duty at the rear of the train.

You do these train images so professionally. Like the red throughout and the clarity is perfect - just beautiful - T

Very nice! One gets the impression that this was shot maybe twenty meters or so in front of the loc, giving the image a special momentum (I know from the exif that it was shot with a 200mm).

It was more like 400-500 meters Bjorn. Thanks for the comments Tony, Stan and Bjorn. I like photographing steam locomotives in action but worry in case I get type cast - I take pictures of other subjects too.

Nice shot David. Shame about the overhead wires but I guess it goes with the territory. Down here on the south coast, the feed is via third-rail - the bad news though is that we rarely get main line steam activity except in the Summer !

I think it's terrific. Typecasting? Not to worry, I won't tell anyone you like trains Good bit of info too, I like that it's taking a run at a hill.

I like the wires..put's the train into it's proper perspective for me, the important part for me is that it's still running today. Keeping old stuff running is pretty cool in my books.

Reminds me of my old wooden train set. I haven't seen a running steam train in Canada, but I remember as a child seeing one when in England. I loved it. Kind of like all things steam powered. Will be building a sterling motor for a customer this year, no steam though.
Nice shot, thanks for bringing back that great memory
