Infamous Sign ---
by Peter Elgar
We went to Auschwitz during the Poland trip -- I had wanted to go for many years-- it was included in our itinerary. We were picked from Hotel with 6 others in a mini-bus -- well there were HUNDREDS of visitors, coachloads of people and we were put into the 'Orange Sticker' English guide group of about 50 -- then through Security which was very strict -- NO 'large bags' so I had to stuff lenses into pockets and leave bag in mini-bus -- metal detectors, so had to take off trouser belt and try to stop trousers falling down, no coins, watches etc in pockets -- Wife got personally searched as her 'Weight-Watchers' Pedometer on her waist set off the alarm ! Then out into grounds of Auschwitz 1 and suddenly saw the 'Infamous Sign' under which so many had passed never to return out. Guide 'rushed us ' through the various Blocks -- had to snatch what photos I could or get lost into another Group -- so many visitors -- well he said 'No Photography' in the room with the Human Hair or when we went into the Gas Chamber with the holes for the Zyclon B pellets, which was respected by everyone . We went onto Camp 2 in mini-bus at Berkenau after camp 1-- I will show some MORE photos --- -- MZ-5+Konica VX 400 film, 24mm f2.8 Carl Zeiss Jena.
