Three Speed

by bwlchmawr

This odd little shot connects me to cold, damp mornings in the late sixties when I used to have a paper round. My bike had a Sturmey Archer three speed hub and I can still feel the cold lever in the crook of my index finger...

I used to ride a dark olive-green Raleigh for girls with the same hub before it was sold to a junk dealer by the janitor of our building without our permission when he was about to retire. It had been bought in the early seventies by my wife in US and then brought to Turkey. After using it more than 20 years it was still like new(not even a rust or scratch). So, this reminds me fondly and sadly of that bike which I had been using a lot. I like the natural light, the overall tone and detail here.

"Sturmey Archer 3 Speed Gears" It rings a bell... no it doesn't - it changes gears! Brings me back too. I like this simple, evocative shot.

I can remember what Campagnolo users used to say about Sturmey!
