White Letter Hairstreak

by davidstorm

I came across this beautiful little rarity in the garden this afternoon whilst mooching about with my K-5iis and 100 WR macro. It is a White Letter Hairstreak butterfly, these are rare because they only live in the top of Elm Trees. As you probably know there are very few Elms left in England after they were decimated by Dutch Elm Disease in the 1970's.

The butterfly had come down to feed on nectar from the Moonpenny Daisies in our garden, I stayed with it for about 30 minutes and got some lovely images.

Lovely image. Focus and composition is spot on. Also like the minimal and repetitious color palette...golden yellows & browns, whites and hints of red! Like it a lot!

Lovely image. The flower seems to have a good deal from it too, judging from all the pollen on its belly!
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass
