White-Breasted Nuthatch - Male

by Wildwood512

A little artistic play with this little White-Breasted Nuthatch photo. Males and females are very similar with the male having a black cap and the females having a gray cap.

A common feeder bird with clean black, gray, and white markings, White-breasted Nuthatches are active, agile little birds with an appetite for insects and large, meaty seeds. They get their common name from their habit of jamming large nuts and acorns into tree bark, then whacking them with their sharp bill to “hatch” out the seed from the inside.

Calls
White-breasted Nuthatches may be small but their voices are loud, and often their insistent nasal yammering will lead you right to them.

The White-breasted Nuthatch’s most common call is a loud, nasal yank often repeated a few times in a row. Both sexes make this call, and it often has a more trembling, almost bleating quality, than either the bird’s song or the Red-breasted Nuthatch’s call. When looking for food, males and females exchange a soft yink.

Another nice capture, is this the one with a call that sounds like a tin trumpet?

The all-over pastel colours are quite nice. Just for once, pink suits a boy!
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

Ty all!

John, I looked up the call of the White-Breaseted Nuthatch and it appears that the Red-Breasted variety is the one that makes the 'tin trumpet' call. I copy and pasted more info on the White-Breasted version pictured here if you are interested.

Maria, yes I am indeed discovering the vast variety of birds present in my area. Until I took to the lens with them, I would have never guessed their to be so many different birds here.

David, boys in pink are all the rage these days, masculinity showing off it's gentler side! Today's woman likes that in a guy! 😉
Cheers...Donna 😊

Thank you for the information Donna, I didn't have my Sibley's to hand at the time so as to be able to check for my self.
