They describe strange, unusual but beautiful shapes in the sky. Till now no one has been able to describe this behaviour and reasons beyond it. Most of scientists beleive this is a defensive strategy (almost an alert signal)..other talks about "an Epideitico behaviour"(like to say it is a social ritual..like to count peoples inside a group..are we all here now??)....Interesting is te study of a math-phisycs researcher in Italy (Rome national research council)...Studing several of these groups he showed that birds keep always same distance between them and this could be a defensive strategy against attacks by enemies. It reminds me of fighting-planes in air. Sorry for boring words above....but if you are able to reproduce the signal of an hawk...starlings fly away in that disposition. Real question is: why peripheral starlings are so stupid to be there?...there are in the suburbs of the group and closer to enemy(hawk)....Anycase they are always under fire. What is (are)the rule(s)that oblige these outer-birds to stay out and cunning peoples stay well protected inside?...IMHO not a stupid question difficult to answer to.

A great image of an amazing shot. It takes a lot of luck & skill to get the whole murmuration in the picture. I've tried a few times on the Somerset Levels and it's always a struggle, and that's assuming you are in the right place on the right day to see them !

Amazing capture! Interesting how the density of birds varies in the formation.

I'm just thankful they have made a resurgence. Lovely image.

Fascinating image, and I really like the subdued sunset sky in the background.
