De Dominicanenkerk was built in what is now the centre of the city of Maastricht located in the extreme south east of the Netherlands. The Gothic style church was consecrated in 1294 as a monastery for the Order of Dominicans which lasted until 1797. For just a short period the building served as a conventional RC church until its functions were transferred to the nearby Sint Servaaskerk in 1805. Thereafter the church saw various other uses; a school, a cultural centre, an exhibition hall etc. In 2005-2006 it underwent a major renovation during which more than 200 graves were discovered in and around the church. Now it took on a new life - as a bookshop! A bookshop that the Guardian newspaper listed as “what could possibly be the most beautiful bookshop of all time” or as one of CNN’s “World’s coolest bookshops”! With a branch of Coffee Lovers included the church is a must on your itinerary in Maastricht.
This photo was taken up on the third level of books.
The lens used on this occasion was a Sigma 28-200mm zoom which seems to be a little on the soft side.
