It'll never catch on...

by 1stEverPentax

Just spotted one of these new fangled pigeon-hawks in our garden. It was like something out of Autumn watch. Pigeon pecking at some seeds under the bird feeder...suddenly this Sparrowhawk swoops down lands on its back, digs its talons in and starts to roll the pigeon before plucking it...poor pigeon trying to escape. The hawk is still feeding an hour later as i'm posting this!

Well captured, that's nature for you red in tooth and claw, I would love to get a shot like this myself.

Well done, Karlo!
It is fantastic to see it happen in your back garden, isn't it?

Thanks very much for the very positive comments. I was just very lucky to be in the right place...and even more fortunate that only a fortnight ago I got the 70-300 lens. I know that the images are still a bit small and technically not great but hopefully the content makes up for it, to a large degree.

It was a very surreal experience though to see nature, as John put it, "red in tooth and claw", right here in my own back garden. I felt very privileged also, I'm just so pleased I had my camera near at hand although the minute it took to get it and the lens, were nail biting...would the birds still be there when I got back? Pictures had to be taken through a not exactly spotless window!

I'll post another two or three during the rest of this week.

thanks for looking,

karlo

The only time a sparrowhawk has done that in my back garden I was eating dinner! Lovely!

Thanks Paul. I'll be keeping a definite look out as another pigeon was found decapitated and partially plucked in our garden this morning
(2 DEC). There's a killer on the loose!
