Canal Sunrise
by GlynM
This is lock 16 on the Basingstoke Canal, at Pirbright, shot from Cowshot bridge (at lock 17) just as the rising sun started coming through the trees and before it had burnt off the early morning mist. I also felt fortunate to have captured a cyclist on the tow-path.
The competition judge suggested a slight crop might improve the image and so this is the cropped version.
Pentax K-5 with a DA55-300 @ 260mm
1/160sec, F8, ISO400 & -0.7 exposure compensation.
Shot raw then processed in LR5 with some final tinkering in PSE10.

I was pleased with the result. There was certainly a lot of luck involved. I chose the spot a few days earlier but had wait for day that promised a cloudless dawn. Capturing the cyclist was a huge bonus.
It was quite a long distance shot with the lens set at 260mm. I had travelled to the site on my bicycle, without a tripod, but fortunately could use a bridge parapet to steady the shot.
It did though inspire me to purchased a tripod that I can carry around on my bike.

Sometimes I'm serious and sometimes not, but I consider sarcasm an artform. Which is it today?
