Black Beauty

by pgweber

Ex LMS No. 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland' has recently been repainted from maroon to black.

It is pictured passing Stoneyford near Alfreton, on it's way from Derby to Scarborough with a day trip called 'The Yorkshire Coronation' (this design of loco hauled a famous train in the 1930s known as 'The Coronation Scot').

It was shot yesterday using K10D/16-45 as a PEF (and also MZ6 + Tamron 80-210 as a colour transparency!).

It could benefit from HDR treatment as the sun was low in the sky leading to some shadow, whilst catching the steam and making it appear brighter.

Gosh that's a good shot - it looks as if it's about to come out of the picture altogether

Well done

Good shot Peter, so much better without the overhead electric lines. I'm hoping to get a picture of this engine painted black before long.

Loved this old timer and/as it is taken so well! Very good perspective, the steam, light and colour saturation all make this great!
P.S.I also love the way you, people of UK, love the engines and their history starting earlier than Stevenson. Understandible, but still amazing! You gave me the inspiration and I went to our station this morning to take a few shots, although it was raining!

Nice shot. Pity it wasn't an all maroon rake.

Thank you all for your appreciative comments.

I think I have managed better shots at other times, because the low Sun casting shadows whilst highlighting the steam was definitely a challenge.
